Penknife or multi-tool. Standard guy gift. Booze is iffy unless you know the person.

No, liquor isn't good because some people don't drink. How about a nice coffee-table book? (There are some pretty cheap art books on the bargain tables at Borders and Barnes and Noble, for example.) Or you could do a gift certificate to a local restaurant.
