[18.86] Until when he reached the place where the sun set, he found it going down into a black sea...
It looks like Mohammad thinks the sun is small enough to go into the sea. Hmmm...definitely NOT one of the so-called scientific miracles in the Koran :)
There are Muslims who actually use that verse to claim Mohammad knew that the Earth was round and that the moon orbits the Earth: "A scientific miracle!"

For ur information Quran is in perfect harmony with science.
THis verse mentiones an essential fact discovered only recently by modern astronomy, i.e. the existence of the individual orbits of the Sun and the Moon, and their journey thru space with their own motion.
The 'fixed place' towards which the sun travels, carrying with the solar system, has been locatedpreirsely by modern astronomy. It has been given a name, the Solar Apex. The solar system is indeed moving in space towards a point situated in the constellation of Hercules (alpwha Lyrae) whose exact location is now firmnly established.
Most school textbooks have now incorporated the fact that sun rotates about its axis. THe rotation of the sun about its own axis can be proved with the help of an equpment that projects theimage of the sun on the top of a table, so that one can examine the image of the sun without being blinded. It is noticed that the sun has spots which complete a circular motion once every 25 days i.e. the sun takes approximately 25 days to rotate around its axis.
The sun travels thru space at roughly 240 km per second, n takes about 200 million years to complete one revolution arount the centre of our Milky Way Galaxy.

IGNORANCE IS BLISS. i suggest you go back to school.
36:38 And the sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him), the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.
{commentary}
And the sun [which] runs (from wa'l-shamsu tajrÄ« to the end [of the statement] is subsumed by [the introductory] wa-Äyatun lahum, 'and a sign for them'; alternatively, it constitutes another sign [for them]; similar is the case with wa'l-qamara, 'and the moon' [further below]) to its resting-place, in other words, it does not overstep it. That, namely, its running, is the ordaining of the Mighty, in His kingdom, the Knower, of His creation.
36:39 And the Moon,- We have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of a date-stalk.
{commentary}
And the moon - (read wa'l-qamaru, in the nominative, or wa'l-qamara, in the accusative; and it may be in the accusative because of a following verb that governs it) We have determined it, with respect to its course, [to run] in phases - twenty eight phases in twenty eight nights of every month; it becomes concealed for two nights when the month has thirty days, and for one night when it has twenty nine days - until it returns, during its final phase seeming to the [human] eye, like an aged palm-bough, in other words, like the stalk with a date cluster when it ages, becoming delicate, arched and yellowish.
36:40 It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).
{commentary}
It does not behove - it is [neither] facilitated nor is it right for - the sun to catch up with the moon, and so appear together with it at night, nor may the night outrun the day, and thus it [the night] never arrives before the latter ends and each (kullun: the nunation compensates for the [missing] genitive annexation [that would have been constructed] with al-shams, 'the sun', al-qamar, 'the moon', and al-nujūm, 'the stars') [of these] is in an orbit, swimming, moving - these [celestial bodies] are being treated as [though they were] rational beings.

To better understand the solar apex and the writings of the Holy Quran in accordance to science visit
Fear of physics.com-Sun, Earth, and Moon in motion.
Science is just barely catching up with the Quran in terms of the Big bang, and the origins of life, ect.... and much is still not known about the sun that scientists are still questioning.

The resting place is sunset. This is a simple way to explaining it. Arabs were not very advanced in those times. They were worshipping idols, how can expect them to think about the round earth and orbits?
God does not choose idiots to be His messengers, Mohammed was illiterate, but not stupid.
This is a close bashing from your side.

I put it this way:
Sunrise - sunset, the orbit of the moon around the earth as the earth orbits around the sun, as all moons orbit around their prospective planets and they, too like the earh orbit around the sun; an ever going thing.

It's possible that 1600 years from now, science will look back at our understanding of the universe and laugh. But if someone wanted to illustrate a point to us today, they'd have to base it on our current understanding of things.
