In 1510 in Riga Latvia Martin Luther was the first person to decorate a tree with small candles to demonstrate to his grandchildren what twinkling stars looked like whilst looking up through the branches of a fur tree at night - as he had sheltered under a fur tree one night and noticed the stars twinkling in a slight breeze through the branches as he was looking up he was moved by this image.

It was a german tradition brought over by prince albert. i heard that as the german forests were so thick, it was easy to get lost and especially at winter time any time out in the cold usually meant a quick death, and so they kept a tree in the corner of their huts and placed offerings underneath as a good will gesture to the spirits of the forest to look after them and let them get home.

It comes from European tribes who along time ago, before Christmas, worshiped trees. When the Christians came they told the pagan barbarians that they could keep the tree thing but now they were Christmas Trees.

It was originally a German idea. Prince Albert, a German, was married to Queen Victoria. He brought the idea to England of putting trees in your home and decrating them with candles.

the actual reason we have christmas trees in england is because when queen victoria married prince albert (a german) he bought that tradition with him, the tradition in england befor that was a yule time chocolate log, yes it's true we get a tree from norway but that's not the reason.
