I'm interested in learning Krav but there are no schools where I live. Is it something I could learn from a book or video? If so, what's a good series?

I want something that is straight up self defense and less of an art. I studied Karate for 2 years, shaolin kung fu for 1. I'm tired of learning forms. Thanks for not answering my question.

That sucks but where I live theres only 3 schools in the entire dfw metroplex thats certified to teach it. Where do you live? To me the Krav Maga techniques aren't too hard to learn, but with anything you should have a trained professional to give you feed back on how to improve and what you are doing wrong. But I guess reading a book or watchin a video and practicing is better than nothing at all.

Anyways when I was in Krav I supplemented my training with these videos they are pretty good in my opinion.

1)Intruduction to Krav Maga
I actually don't have this video I think its on the history of Krav

2)Krav Maga Basic Combatives
Teaches you strikes:elbows,knees,punches, kicks

3)Krav Maga The Best Defense
Teaches defense from holds: chokes, headlocks, bearhugs

4)Krav Maga On The Edge
Defense from different knife attacks

5)Krav Maga Line of Fire
Defense from a handgun

Good luck

there is a lot of video courses online, DVD you can buy, or even download a digital version. i can recommend you one that i've been using, from a 3rd generation krav maga instructor , called guy dar.
you can find more about is dvd on: http://www.972kravmaga.com

now its really cool self defense video course, but i must say that dont forget if you wanna learn krav maga or any martial arts i guess, you should have someone that gonna learn with you, if not it will be a bit hard to practice what you learn in the course.
anyway, good luck.

Cnote has you on the right track as far as videos go. I have that series and it does provide a good visual lesson on basics of Krav Maga.

A good book on the subject is "Krav Maga: An Essential Guide to the Renowned Method--for Fitness and Self-Defense" by David Kahn.

Just a warning.... I am a little hesitant about the Krav Maga approach to defense against blade or guns. There seems to be a big emphasis on grabbing the weapon (especially handguns) which is a dangerous thing as Krav Maga presents.

save yourself some time and watch some old kung fu theatre and bugs bunny cartoons.

You are as likely if not more, to learn martial arts from there as you are from a book or video.

You can't learn from a book or video because you have no one to correct you. That is the real benefit of a teacher and the only way you can learn anything. You also can't possibly know if you are actually doing what they say right. And also most importantly in a class you will be able to train with resistance (if the school is any good) against a live opponent (classmate) and multiple different people of different sizes and body types (this is why a "private" lesson is not always great).

I would suggest you find a good teacher of any style and train with them. If you aren't training in realistic (resistance, close as possible to real situation, less rules no point sparring) situations, you aren't going to be getting much out of it.

I don't understand why you would rather learn from a video than a live instructor with actual people to practice on. Even if it is a different martial art than Krav maga. No offense, I just don't get it.
