It does not say you shall not cut down a tree but it says to learn not the way of the hathen. Jeremiah 10: 2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. Jeremiah 10: 3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. Jeremiah 10: 4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

2 This is what the LORD says:
"Do not learn the ways of the nations
or be terrified by signs in the sky,
though the nations are terrified by them.

3 For the customs of the peoples are worthless;
they cut a tree out of the forest,
and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel.

4 They adorn it with silver and gold;
they fasten it with hammer and nails
so it will not totter.

this is really refering to the making of idols that is why it is so dangerous to take a verse out of context

Right next to the verse about painting eggs, and hiding them for Children, and the one about the fat guy in a red suit... hmm, oh, yeah, I think it's where all the new rules are, like the one where the sabbath became sunday, and god said everyone had to same religion, and screw that whole, "be kind to strangrers" thing, you are supposed to aggressively convert them... Yeah, it's all in the same place....

It does not go into detail about how you should go about celebrating either his birth or his death. It is simply done out of reverence. However, the traditions of doing many of the things involving decorations and such are directly borrowed from pagan religious ceremonies and such.

I must have missed that one. I don't think God cares if you have a tree. He cares about matters of the heart.
