You pose a very good question, but you must ask yourself are all Shiites and Sunni really killing each other or is it just a few? And why are these killings taking place? Does the Holy Quran condone these killings?
We know Europe to be full of devout Catholics and Protestants. Christianity is a religion of peace and love, but yet that never kept them from each other's throats. I need not site examples.
And then there is European aggression against humanity in the name of Christianity, in the name of progress, and in the name of civilization during their "discoveries" of new lands. What possibly drove these people to disregard respect for life?
So we know it is not Islam per se that compels men, women and children to violence, but rather the lack of education, lack of economic opportunity, the feeling of destitute, hate, distrust and parochialism that make people easy targets for the "evil" doings of an opportunistic few.
And sometimes it is sheer stupidity; for example, why did so many Americans allow George W. Bush to wage an illegal war of aggression against Iraq in the name of peace and freedom? And why do some many Americans still believe Iraq had something to do with 9/11? Because they are stupid and have been mislead by the Bush Administration. And Dub'ya is a "born again" Christian!
So to answer your question: There are opportunist who will take advantage of a sad situation for personal gain in the name of religion, in the name of peace or in the name of self defence / freedom.
But, do you ever wonder why it is that so many people around the world would protest over an image in a news paper (regardless if it was right or wrong to print those images) or at the words of a Pope, and yet we do not see the same crowd calling for the end of sectarian violence and US aggression in Iraq and Israeli aggression in Palestine?
The answer: Religion my friend!
Because they are blinded from the truth by the very religion they believe will set them free. Not just Muslims, but Christian, Jews, Hindus too...
You know, I believe the Taliban destroyed those Buddhist statues because the people needed food, education and government, and yet aid agencies wanted to preserve statues! So they got rid of the statues and brought stability to the land.
Let's take a look at France (I only bring this up because it was a hot issue some years ago). It was clear when the French government reminded people that it was indeed against the law to wear the khimar or head scarfs and any other religious symbol in public schools and other government run establishments.
Was this wrong of the French government? No, not in a world where religion has taken a more active role in dividing the people and making them more prone to violence.
We can not allow the "believers" to freak out and start killing people. Remember the abortion clinic bombings in the US? And that is why we need restrictions on religion as we would any other control substance.
People should be free to smoke, but not when it has a negative effect on others. People should be free to do drugs, but not when it has a negative effect on others. People should be free to practice their religion any way they see fit, BUT not when it has a negative effect on others. And I will be damned if I let some religious nut fukc up my shiat because "god" told them to do it. That is pure insanity.
Am I advocating that we take the same direction of the Taliban and destroy churches, meeting houses, synagogue and mosques, etc? No. But I will say a secular society, a secular education and the ability to make an honest living is the only thing that will end the problems. Secularism should be the norm, not the exception.
I close with these quotes:
"If the worth of a tree is judged by its fruit, Christianity should be pulled by the root"
- iTchkung!
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

Every religion is a religion of peace. Shiites and Sunnies killing each other has more to do with conflict of culture and racism than with Islam, same as a lot of wars "in the name of god" throughout history.

very good question.
appologetic Muslims will say that it is due to Americans' presence and zion infiltrates.
however, the truth is that during Saddam Hussein regime (who was a sunni) shiites accumulated grudges so now that a shia ruler was supported by US to get to power, everyone is ready for revenge.
(101 Days in Bagdad by Asne Seierstad)
plus, there is a power struggle in the Middle East between shia Iran and suni traditional states such as the ones of the Gulf, and Iraq has become a "playground" for both.
differences between shias and sunis date back to the days after the prophet's death. shias said it should be fatima's husband (Ali, cousin of Muhammad) who should have become the first Islam khalifa, and sunis say it should have been Abu Bakhr, who was a close follower and friend of the prophet and father of his favorite wife (Aisha). Sunis and shias had an armed battle for this back then... and things don't seem to have changed much.

Chrisitians tend to do the same. In Ireland for example very recently. All over Europe a few centuries ago. It probably has not much to do with religion. Just bad people enjoying violence...
Oh I almost forgot, pastafarians, of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster never kill anyone, but you knew that already I am sure :-)

Because each one wants to have a dictator in power that represents THEIR version of Islam. Each group considers the other to be heretical and therefore does not want the other group using their interpretation of the Koran to impose totalitarian Sharia law upon the country.
If people are going to have one person calling all the shots like Saddam did, they want to make damn sure that person believes THEIR version of Islam. They believe there should be no separation of Church and State. They don't want a democracy.

They're not killing each other as a religious practice, they're killing each other because they hold that much hatred for each other. They're just using Islam as a useful excuse, like the Spaniards used Christianity during the Inquisition.

people who kill shiite persons are no longer sunni, they are Wahhabi's (extremists muslims) they do no longer settle for different sects. Islam isn't what ,uslims do, its what muslims are meant to do. Sunni + Shia = Muslim and screw all people who would not agree

These are acts of mislead people, if not evil minded. Why blame it on Islam? You have Bush, who is as bad as Bin Laden, his acts do not make me say anything against Christianity.
