Are there any LCD or Plasma TVs significantly more power efficient than others?

Also, would it be possible to save power if the screen usage could be made smaller for when the big 40 inch screen is not required, eg. wathcing the news etc.

in general an LCD tv will use 30% less power and generate 30% less heat than a plasma screen...

LCD screens are a lot more energy efficient than plasma any way.
