Fruity drinks will make you sicker than if you stick with beer.If you like to drink beer, there is nothing wrong with drinking it at a xmas party. You might be even win some respect from your male colleagues if you drink beer rather than the standard "woman's cocktails" fruity drinks.
One rule of thumb of preventive medicine, buy some Aspirin,Tylenol and take a few before indulging. Stop at a few drinks, eat ,relax ,and maybe have one or 2 after ..then quit.
If you do that ,you should have no problem.

I'm assuming this is an after-hours party? One should drink whatever one wishes to drink without getting drunk. If you are uncomfortable drinking a beer, then don't drink one, but it certainly has nothing to do with what is "proper" or not. Beer is a perfectly acceptable beverage. You might enjoy a glass of wine more, and it might taste better with your meal. Again -- has nothing to do with something being proper. What is improper is to get sloshed at a staff party. Yes, I know people do it all the time, but it's really not a good idea to get drunk for this type of event -- these are your coworkers and managers.

Well, assuming you don't want to be the center of attention in a bad way at your party, I'd highly suggest a glass of wine, preferably white though red is fine if there isn't a good chilled white wine. Wine, despite its ubiquitousness these days still is perceived as a "classy" drink (don't ask me why, that's a whole page long answer right there...). It tends to be something you sip slowly (so the alcohol takes a heck of a long time to actually affect you) and it's something you can hold for a long time without ice in it melting or you just looking strange. Definitely limit yourself to one, or at most 2 glasses but definitely no more and make sure you space them out. Remember, you don't have to be drunk at a holiday party to have fun.
Be safe, and enjoy!

Since it is an office PARTY, I would suggest maybe a glass of wine with dinner, you are right beer isn't really appropriate. And if you'd like an after dinner drink thats fine. (one)
Your moderation shows discipline and respect. There is nothing worse than someone drinking too much at a company party,'cause the boss is footin the bill. Not that I meant you would do that, but watch someone will. lol

The worst-case scenario is that you would lose control and do something that you would be ashamed of when you had to work with these people from now on. You can completely avoid this by not drinking alcohol at all -- just have cranberry juice or soda or something if you don't want to feel left out. You'll keep your wits about you and you won't have to wonder about your behavior.

If I may strongly suggest to you, whatever you drink, just don't get drunk. Many people at office Christmas parties have done this and have been sorry after the fact. People will tell you "oh come on its Christmas, Have a good time". But if you get drunk, those same people will be laughing and talking about you behind your back for days after the party. Plus, your boss sees you acting stupid and that sticks in the back of his/her mind, and just maybe if you acted jerky enough, may influence any decision of who gets promoted. Have fun, just watch your alcohol intake.

I'm a beer person myself, but would probably order wine at a dinner party. Main thing I would suggest is limiting yourself to only one drink since it's work related. Nothing spells azzhole more than seeing a co-worker get wasted and then having to face them at work.

A nice glass of white wine is a safe bet, but I still drink beer. Not too much, though. Just a couple of drinks.

Yes, one drink is all you get and a glass of white or red wine is very appropriate for a lady. Just sip it, and you don't even have to finish it.
Let someone else be the silly drunk at the office party!
