To protect his retail distribution chain. He sees more sales coming from "salons" then via other sources. His net result might be more sales, less profit with no built in sales force (your local salon). The salons don't want to hear from their customers how they can get the product cheaper (so... they'll just switch to another product). Some product sold outside the "chain" may be counterfeit.

In short: It was a smart business move.

My hairstylist told me that salon products, like Paul Mitchell, that are not sold in the salon are somehow diluted or modified so they can be sold at grocery stores, etc. Basically, they are not the original products. He told me this before I saw the commercial by Paul Mitchell. So, I am still somewhat unsure about the exact reason that the products are modified.

He was made aware that only his salons could control the counterfeit and knockoff copies of his products discount retailers and small salon supply places were offering the public.

Black-market reasons. If it's not purchased in a salon it didn't come from the P man. My sister owns a salon and she has that crap all over the place.

He makes more money that way...he also is trying to add a bit of exclusivity to his product to justify his not so justifiable prices. You can by John Frieda's products at Walmart and they are even better that John Mitchell's. Mitchell's product smell fabulous...but that is all. =^..^=
