Chances are, whatever you get her, she'll be more content playing with the box it came in.
You don't need to go overboard for a 1 year old, and I think that what you have spent is sufficient.

You could always ask baby's mother if there's anything that she would like her daughter to have, to save you the stress of picking something out :)

I cannot think of the actual name of the toy but most major department stores have them. They are little hand held doohickies that when you push a button on the side, the lights inside will start swirling and twirling.
My aunt got my youngest one several years ago and he still loves that thing. I know my description isn't very helpful but you'll know it when you see it. They're usually over by the unusual gifts (like those gel balls that when you squeeze them they bulge out).
I tried to find it on the walmart website but didn't have any luck. If anyone else knows the name of this, let me know please.
They really are fun for the kiddies.

At one year the best thing you could get for a child is something that makes them use their motor skills, hand-eye coordination stuff, educational based movies and such. Also, you could get baby blankets that are embossed with their name and the birth date on it or baby clothes. It shouldn't matter how much it costs at this age, at one kids usually like the packaging material better than whats actually inside the wrapping paper.

Shoot for anything manipulative, to get their hands moving and trying to coordinate things. Mine loved the Fisher Price blocks that have stuff in them, ( I have no idea what their called, sorry) another good indicator is most baby topys these days now have age ranges on the side of the package, I know Fisher Price does.

How about a personalized book? Kids love to hear their name in the storyline - Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of cute titles like Ballerina Princess, Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Sesame Street and so many more. They are so cute and reasonably priced, although I think they are more than $6.00. Check it out, and good luck!

why don't you go to a second hand store, they have things that are un opened or go to the dollar store and buy her a plastic barbie or fake make up. I don't think that there is much to buy with only 6 dollars at target. Go to tj maxx, they have cheap stuff there

Target has $5 gifts that I swear my daughter likes more than the expensive ones! Also, they have the $1 books, my daughter loves them too. As the mother of a 1 yr old, I say books are always welcome!

find something that will stimulate their mind. the ball that you you put the shaped pieces in is still great for that. there is also the one that you hammer the shapes into (all plastic of course). Shapes and colors are great at that age and stimulating thier minds now will help them for years to come.
