If you are askiing why an ambulance is in standby during an operation, it is because there may be a propensity for injury to eith the officer or subject and, since we are trying to SAVE lives, desire immediate medical attention if necessary. You are quite foolish for thinking or calling an ambulance a decoration.

Spags got it right on. When ever law enforcement does something that has a possibility of resulting in any injury, having medical personel on scene helps reduce liability issues with the promptness of medical aid for losers that don't want to take responsibility for their actions. Also, when police have a good idea one of their own may get hurt and they have the resources to prevent delay to getting their guys better medical aid, why not decorate with an ambulance. Its good PR to have medical hanging our where the little kiddies can see them in action.
