well ive had my tounge periced for about 4 months now, ive kept the internally thread original one in for this entire time, just recently i switched it to a different store bought like $10 one with plastic beads , there is a slight pain in the area of the peircing itself, i highly dobt it is an infection, but will not rule out the possibility. i was thinking it might be because the new barbell is a lower grade metal...but i would like to keep this new one is because it is clear and i just got a new job where peircings arent allowed. i would really like professionals or people that have had this happen to relpy. to all those who answer thank you in advance.

Additional Details

i cant mix and match with this one the beads used on the original are thread differently than the new plastic, i haven't been able to find clear beads that will go into the orignial metal bar

p.s. sorry for posting twice i just wanted to see if i could get as many answers/suggestions as possible.

no there is no swelling at all the pain is not intense and it is only where the metal is touching, so all around the metal hurts a little bit. thank you all so much i appreciate the help. i think im going to see my peircer tomorrow and she what she will say about different jewelry alternatives for me. once again thank you.

You are going to have to give me more details. Is the pain on near the underside of the tongue or the top, or is the pain in the middle of your tongue (inside)? Is there any swelling, near the piercing, only on the edges of your tongue, or both? Was your tongue pierced from the bottom up or top to bottom? Is the ring you have now surgical grade plastic? Are the beads acrylic or plastic? Or you don't know?

Keep in mind the tongue is a muscle and the piercing you have will never heal. It is always an opening that is trying to close. Treat it as such. Also anything less than surgical grade should not be used. Including beads. Plastic in the mouth is a HUGE no no due to the fact you can bite with over 40 pounds of pressure while chewing. If you were to bite down on the plastic and it became sharp or broke internally you would be in some big trouble. A better option is a surgical steel barbell with acrylic flat pink colored ends. Almost unnoticeable. Although you should always put back in your surgical steal barbell when eating or not at work.

In the meantime I prescribe salt washes. No smoking either if you do. Sea salt is best, in warm water. Gargle, and swish thoroughly while moving the bar up and down inside your mouth. You need to brush after every meal and use a alcohol free mouthwash. Salt wash before bed and when you wake up. NO SMOKING!

Yea that's the problem with internal threading. I would recommend switching the barbells when you get home from work and sleeping in the original barbell. You are right about the metal being lower quality and causing irritation, especially since you have not had your piercing for very long. They have an entirely plastic tongue ring "retainer" that shouldn't irritate your piercing, and it is completely invisible. The only problem is I couldn't leave it in for too long because then it was hard to take out...one time I had to cut it (there's a little ball at the bottom). You could also buy a nice new barbell online or something made of titanium with external threading and use the clear beads on that bar. If you believe it might be an infection, start cleaning it twice a day again like you did when you first got the piercing.

It is a high possibility it has a lot to do with the new tongue ring. If the old one was not bothering you and if you did not scrape the inside of the hole while putting the new one in then I would say it is the tongue ring. You should go to the place where you got your piercing and see what type of barbells they have. The metal will be a higher grad and you can probably get one that has a flesh color bead. I would suggest using a hole retainer at work but after losing mine i now say don't. I am probably the only person who has had one slip out though. lol.

Infection can happen many months after a piercing like this. Tongue piercing is one the more dangerous and actually rather stupid piercings you can get.

Your employer may not be happy with clear plastic jewelry or retainers if their rule is really "no piercing." (I'm in health care and most clinics and many offices will not permit visible piercings.) You need to decide if your health and your job are more important or if have something stuck in your tongue is what rules your life.

No one who has really done their homework about the complications of tongue piercing would agree to it unless they are being deliberately stupid. I'm not trying to be mean, just telling you the truth. I know several professional piercers who will not pierce a tongue for anyone.

Get that tongue checked out to be sure there is no infection if you insist on keeping this. The blood vessels communicate closely with those in the brain and this can be life threatening. Someone has recently died from an infected tongue ring. The mouth has too many germs normally present for this to ever be safe.

How long have you had the new piercing in? Give it a few days and the pain might go away. If not you'll have to take it out. You should be able to get a good quality clear retainer from the studio that did the piercing.

convinced it truly is adverse to all protection force branches regulations to get tongue earrings, vaginal/penis piercings and nipple earrings. There are different professions that you need to look into that are fascinated in such holes on your body, yet no longer the U. S. protection force.
