This is quite a random question but i'm currently painting a canvas for a good friend for Christmas. I'm hoping to fill the space at the bottom with a short poem or a quote or something but I don't know what to put... I don't want anything too tacky eg "If friends were flowers I'd pick you" but i do want it to be a message which shows I'm grateful for her friendship... help!!! Lol!

Maybe quote a line from a suitable poem about friendship. You could do a bit of searching on the net and maybe get some inspiration.

BTW, what a lovely idea for a gift, really lovely.

OMG check bible basher above me...........what the hell??

Little did we know when we first became friends that our relationship would grow to be this strong. it's nice to know that life sometimes brings us unexpected treasures and that I've found one in you.

(thats too long, I think to be put on a canvas!)

or
"You were the one who made things different, you were the one who took me in. You were the one thing I could count on, above all, you were my friend."
- Tom Petty
or
In good times, in bad times I'll be on your side forever more, that's what friends are for."
- "That's what friends are for"
or
Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow.
Don't walk behind me, I may not lead.
Walk beside me and be my friend."
- Albert Camus (also attributed to Maimonidies). Sent by clovers
or
"Yesterday brought the beginning, tomorrow brings the end, but somewhere in the middle we've become best of friends."
or
"When we are grown, we'll smile and say we had no cares in childhoods day, but we'll be wrong. 'Twill not be true, I've this much care... I care for you."
or
I don't remember how we happened to meet each other. I don't remember who got along with whom first. All I can remember is all of us together...always."
or
"A circle is round it has no end, that's how long I want to be your friend!"
- Anonymous
or
"A friend is like a rainbow. They brighten your life when you've been through a storm."

Thats it !! I am done, hope all that helps...

How about a few simple quotes?
Some of my favorites are:
"A friend is someone who is there for you when he'd rather be anywhere else."
"Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow.
Don't walk behind me, I may not lead.
Walk beside me and be my friend."
The happiest moments my heart knows are those in which it is pouring forth its affections to a few esteemed characters."

There are so many more- Just look on quotation pages under the Friends category!

Do a Google search for Khalil Gibran - quotes, beautiful quotes to suit all occassions, I'm sure you'll find something suitable. What a lovely gift by the way.

The Miracle of Friendship.

There's a miracle of Friendship that dwells within the heart,
And you don't know how it happens or when it gets its start.
But the happiness it brings you always gives a special lift,
And you realize that Friendship is God's most precious gift.

“The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch swing with, never say a word, then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation that you ever had.” (I LOVE THIS ONE)

“Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend.” ~ Albert Camus

Well, well, well, another day in hell.
The demons dance upon tips of flames,
While their blisters boil and swell.
Here we sit in a fiery pit.
Pondering what we will do as well.
Will we follow the Angels call.
Or fall under the Devil's spell

This is a poem I wrote: You can use part of it or all of it if you would like:

I want to be, the perfect memory
And bring forward the light in your face
Set among the daydreams and regrets
Persistent, anxious and genuine.
I want to be, the perfect memory.

Friendship is like standing on a wet cement,
You cannot go without leaving your foot prints behind

Though I doubt you'd want something comedic,I do love this one:
'A friend will bail you out of jail. A good friend will be sitting next to you saying,"Damn! That was fun!!"'

May I please add that reply #1 is very freaky!!! What did that have to do with the question???
