I plan to use them as the light beams for my home security system. I find with normal light beams the lens tend to mist up in wet weather. A laser could be aimed at the sensor direct. The laser can also be greatly reduced in brightnesss by pulsing it to be on for only 1 milisec in 40 this also reduces the power in case anyone looked directly into it.

A couple of hours - if you keep changing the batteries then the life of the laser pen should be in the high tens of thousands of hours. If its more than 5 miliwatts its not safe to get it shone in your eye even briefly. They sell some powerful lasers on the net these days and I cant believe for a second they're all being bought by mature and responsible people.

As for security... At night time many lasers even fairly weak ones would be visible. You'd be much better getting infrared beams which could be very weak (no changing batteries at 4am) and would be invisible to any prowler. Try running a search on home security and having a look to see whats available. A good 100+ mW laser might be good to blind the prowler if he gets past all the other defences.

If it has an external power-supply, the laser could go on for a long long time.. Of course it depends upon the quality of the components.. It will eventually burn up.. like any LED might burn up after prolonged usage..

if it has got an external power supply then can this not be plugged into the mains supply?

If not, for whatever reason, look at the mWh needs of the laser and compare it to the power per time ability of the power source.

light beam home security forget it, can be more effective if u use it on your handgun like a laser red dot with scope more deadly at night when you attach it on your glock 22 or a 9mm Beretta

usb drive has no comparison to hard drive in speeds whether writing or reading so your computer becomes slower in loading OS and then running of other applications will also becomes slower.
