He has just bought them at a reduced price (50p). They are a month past their use by date, but they are in a sealed packet. He is addicted to flapjacks and will eat them all as soon as he rips open the packet.

"use by" and "best before" dates are really just a way for a company to cover their **** against lawsuits brought bey people eating stuff that's off. They choose a date where, unless some damage has happened to the product, 99.9% of the products will still be absolutely fine to eat.

Basically, so long as it looks, smells and tastes OK (we're talking about food here, not anything in general!!!) then it'll probably cause no harm.

I've had tinned, dried, frozen food all past their "best before" dates and even something like yoghurt or cheese can be used well after its "use by" date if kept properly in the fridge.

The worst thing that will happen is he will have to go to the toilet. But no, nothing serious will happen to him if he eats something past the expiration day. Also, is the date marked as "best before...." or "expires on..."? It's not necessarily the same thing. It just means it won't taste as great, and they're not responsible for it if you eat it and you don't like it and want a refund or something. They only guarantee the quality up to a certain date. But there is always some grace period. (My husband eats things way past the expiration/best by date, if it doesn't smell and or look moldy and he hasn't died yet;) )

A ate a sachet of ketchup that was over a year out of date last night. Apart from the red colour being a little darker than usual (almost black) I survived fine and with no dicky tummy! He'll be ok too. As long it smells ok and has no mould then it shouldn't be off

I think the only real danger he's in is an upset stomach.
Where did he buy them from - no1 should be selling food that's a month past the sell by date!! - Dodgy!

There shouldn't be any danger to him as long as the package was thoroughly sealed where no air could get in and form any bacteria.

not reli, flapjacks contains a lot of sugar, which is a very good preservative, unless your friend ate a years out of date one, he should be ok

1 month, that nothing

sell by/use by / best buy dates are nonsense. Make your own judgement but it it looks and smells ok, i eat it.

I recently drank some 15 year old bottled beer, it was fine.

Well, if they are manufactured by 'Hoppers Farmhouse Bakeries' then they should be absolutely fine. They are blended with Lyle's golden syrup and that lasts forever!

If he does feel ill, call the doctor immediately and don't forget to sue the newsagent in question.

No. Most food producers have to heavily overestimate the use by date just to ensure that no one dies!

He's suicidal. Even if they were "in date", eating too much flapjacks can lead to too much sugar in the blood, which could bring on diabetes. With diabetes he could lose a foot or two, go blind, have a heart attack & die.

We are what we eat.
