Honestly christianity, simply because first off they edited t he bible to suit their own ideas of morality, and second every since there was one true god there has been killing in his name. It is a nice way to live your life but I will not scare my children into beleiving this perfect god will burn them in hell if they dont him. I will teach my children to live the right way because its the right thing to do not because of fear.

No, I spent 6 years in the U.S. military to defend the right of everyone to worship (or not to) as they see fit. I would rather take the intolerance towards others out of the human equation so that all faiths could coexist. Faith is what gives others hope for what may lie beyond the veil of the next world. And although there is a lot a bad that goes with the followers of some faith there is still good that has been done in the name of religion too, just look at all the charity organizations that wouldn't exist without the religions that started them.

Religion, just like other things, should exist. We just have to learn to take the good with the bad.

This is actually not such a far-fetched question: Geneticists have found a gene that predisposes people toward religious experiences. Very soon it will be possible to design a retrovirus that can modify that gene to shut it off. So at some point, somebody will be able to make this choice.

On the other hand, someone else will also be able to make a different retrovirus that will switch the gene ON for everyone!

I suppose the only fair course of action then will be to make both available to everyone, so we can each choose to enable or disable our own religiosity.

But I think an even more useful retrovirus would be able to turn on our genes for compassion and empathy. Then the state of our "religion gene" would not matter so much.

You bet I would!!!!!!!!!! IT has caused so much harm and only serves to give people something to argue and fight about - "I'm right, your religion is wrong" and vice versa. So much fighting and deaths all for religion. Tee Spanish Inquisition, The Crusades, 9/11, The Holocaust, The Civl War in Iraq, the Israel-Palestinian war... all these horrific events because of religion one way or another. Without a question I would erase religion for good if I could but I can't.

Even supressing religion would be bad because it would make it seem more taboo and illegal and thus attractive to those looking to cause trouble or those looking for excitement. Sort of how underage drinkers sort of lose their excitement for been able to drink when they actually can drink without anyone stopping them.

And to those that say religion is good but only the bad people do these things, it doesn't matter because in the end religion is still the cause, the gas to the flame which makes everything burn in the end.

I could never personally rid the earth of religion but I will support it's demise when this system of things turns on itself. You are absolutely right that religion brings more harm than good. Organized religion is nothing more than commercialism. I look forward to an earth full of peace and true worship under the Sovereign of the Universe, Jehovah.

The problem is not religion by itself, which is here to enlighten the ones who choose it.

The problem is how it is sometimes used by some seeking power over others, using it to justify their politics and vision, and trying to put other people under their control. Religion and fear are together strong insutrments to make the crowds believe anything. Should it be in a developing country or and post-industrial country.

However, anybody should be able to be free and live its beliefs, with respect to other beliefs even if they are opposite, and with respects to human rights which are a basis to all human beings peace.

Wanting to eradicate religion is being a maximalism in its own way, a bit like bolchevik in Russia who did not stand religions. If you want to get rid of religion, you will have to kill believers, priests, rabbis, mullahs, monks, etc, and you would be as bad as Staline or Mao or Hitler.

Yes, I would. Religion has been the biggest force of human destruction ever documented. Countless battles have been fought over religious beliefs. Just as many people were slain in the tirade of various religions. Religion today is more docile, but it is still a breeding ground for hate. The majority of the world's intolerance is due to religion. There are still hate crimes, and mass oppression rallies regularly in the name of religion.

I believe religion will be the cause of the human race's destruction.

A few people asked a similar question to this some time back.....

Why ask something with the 'if' when it will never happen nor can you attempt to do it?

Why do you peope like to yous the word 'if' especially in a question that even 'if' is weak in the question...

Use the word 'if' in a question that can happen like ' if a squirrel jump out of a window will it land safely?', that's a perfect question....

But 'if you where able to get rid of religion would you, and why.? ' that question is an imperfect question... it's impossible for it to happen!

I do believe that everyone has the right to believe in what they want. But I do agree wholeheartedly with your that religion is the root cause to the majority of all of the problems in the world. Considering the fact that religious extremism all around the world is running rampant, it's like removing a limb that has cancer.

I will ring your doorbell and run away!!!

If I were able to get rid of religion, I would get rid of humanism and secularism. As you say, these bring a lot more harm than good.
People have a God conciousness and naturally worship. Removing or denying this is a truly bad thing!

I have asked myself in the past why do I believe in the church? I mean you hear of all of these terrible things that happen to people by people of all faiths. There really isn't one faith out there that hasn't had its fair share of black eyes. But to me the answer is that the church itself is as close to being perfect as can be. After all it was created with divine power from God the Father. Its the people who pervert it that is imperfect. Religion is what gives us hope. Its what gives us the ability to have faith. Even if it is atheistic. I have known a few people in my faith that could have ruined it for me for life if i didn't believe that the Church is perfect not the people. Religion is neccessary. In my humble opinion.
