our generation all grew up with them and funny enough did not get run over or stolen and did not end up with weird hangups either.

I used a wrist leash with my oldest child when he was a toddler. The main job of a parent is to keep their child safe. I don't recommend putting the child on a leash just so you don't have to watch him but they do help to keep them safe.
Kids can do the unexpected (like dart into traffic, run off) and we've all heard the stories about a woman out shopping, she took her eyes off her kid for a second and he disappeared.
It's not child abuse. I'd rather see a kid on a leash then some crying frantic mother who's lost her kid.

I had a wrist leash with my 1st daughter. At the time, I had 2 other kids 4 & 6. I didn't care what other people thought about how I chose to keep my baby close at hand. I didn't yank on her like a dog, it just kept us teathered to each other.

Prior to the leash, the little angel would dart off in parking lots, not too safe and not too smart. Imagine trying to chase after her and leave the other two infront of the store alone. Not smart mothering.

Oh well those were the good old days. She was the only one that had that running away issue. So, I suppose you look at the individual child and then look at the situation.

I am sorry but I think these people who say this is abuse, terrible, blah blah are just ignorant to the world or live in a hick town where everyone knows everyone. There are ALOT of people out there out to hurt or take your children. If they think putting a harmless little HARNESS on a child to make sure they are always at arms length are abusing their child then I think not doing it is abuse. I guess you people must have eyes in the back of your head, on your eyes, butt and legs. Kids get away VERY fast. My child is 2 and is very well behaved. She pretty much sticks by my side but every once in a great while, she will see something she likes and wonders away. Not to mention, my daughter is very friendly and says hi to everyone. She could very easily be swayed by a stranger while I am taking cat food off the top shelf at Walmart.

I really applaud those of you with eyes all over your body and a perfect child who stands as a robot.

Let me tell you my story. When I was little my parents had leashes for us. As we grew older my mom stopped using them on me. The one day we went to a harbor festival. My mom had my sister (younger than me) on a leash. I got lost. Don't ask me why. There was millions of people and my mom was attending to my sister when I lost sight of her for a minute and found myself lost. Everyone started looking for me. After about an hour, they found me. I've decided, no-one will convince me otherwise. If I could get lost, with a paranoid mom, at the age of 6, so can any child. If your going to any type of public place, regardless if there's 5 or 500 people. My kids will all be leached. Not because they wonder of but because there are sick people out there who likes nothing more than small kids seemingly standing around. Ready to be stolen or even worse.

I agree with the person saying "BITE ME"!! People who think they're super parents, be warned, a child can get lost in a split second!!

No. Those things are ridiculous. Get a stroller, a Baby Bjorn, a backpack, or something else if you're going somewhere crowded or that it's not safe for the kid to walk on his/her own. Leashes are for dogs not kids!

yes every time i go to to the mall there's at least one kid who gets lost so i recommend the leash. the ones on their wrist don't keep your child from getting away but they remind the parent who is not paying attention that their child is getting a little to far away.

In my opinion a leash should only be used in instances where the childs safety is threatened by a crown, as in amusement parks, very busy fairs, malls etc.... I do not think they should be used very often, however I have seen situation where is would be more safe to use one such as the amusement park, it would only take 1 second in that crowd and your kid could be gone.

Yes, unless it's one of those choke chains.

Joking. It's socially acceptable, just don't act inappropriately with the leash like yelling at the child or dragging them along. People know that those are for safety and won't think negatively of you.

A better alternative is a harness. My mom had one of those with my little brother, because he figured out the leash pretty quickly.

What ever happened to learn to teach a child to listen to a parents?

First of all, people uses leash for an animal because We cannot communicate with them,

We have to learn to teach to speak to and with children instead of degrading them with something like leash?

Yes I know We are after all animals but We CAN communicate with each other don't we?

kids can have kids but sure don't know what to do with their own kids, sad very sad.
and to think all this people answering to this question and saying it is OK is ,sad.
