Yes you should not feed them potatoes. It is the actual potatoe peelings that do the harm since they are toxic to dogs (see web link below). It is the sodium alkoloids present in some green potato peelings (which occur when the potatoe tuber is exposed to sunlight during their growth or after harvesting). The sodium alkoloids apparently can result in solanine which is poorly absorbed by the dog. However usually this does not happen and the sodium alkaolids are hydrolysed (broken down by water) into solanidinel and the results metabolites (waste products) are readily eliminated.

One sure way of ensuring your dog does not get any toxic affects from potatoes is to never give them green skinned potatoes. Instead to ensure you cook them and mash them enabling your dog to digest them readily.

Solanine is a toxin found in potatoes. So, some will say you shouldn't feed it to animals. However, if you just cut off the green bits and the buds they're fine to feed to dogs, just not in excess.

Most potatoe species sold in grocery stores and grown in industrilized nations have very little of the toxin, anyway.

My dog loves a french fry every now and then. But I also add a little plain sweet potatoe as a treat sometimes to the dry food.

nope, not true, or at least not that simply.
green skins are also bad for humans, btw.
a friend of mine, on a vet's advice, is feeding her dog a special food that consists primarily of potatoes and fish. it is controlling a food allergy that was causing the dog's ears to have a chronic fungus infection. she can tell within a couple of days if she changes the diet that the fungus is coming back.

All of my dogs have eaten potatoes and none of them have suffered for it. You can feed your dog left over potatoes, I wouldn't give them raw or fries (because of the fat).

given in moderation they should be fine. Just like everything else. they do have a high starch/carb level. and fried has a high fat intake. to much fat can cause pancreatitis.
