I stopped smoking for 7 years because I wanted to. I used nothing. I just quit. Just bought two packs of cigs the night before and gave them away. I never had a problem with smoking again ................ until about two years ago when I went through some very stressful times. I smoked one cigarette and it was like i never stopped. Still smoking two years later. I hate it but know I am not ready to quit. You cannot quit unless you really truly want to. Then you quit. Smoking is not a habit, it is an addiction and worse than most drugs. A pox on people who say it is a "bad habit". The stop smoking aids don't work for people who don't want to stop.

Hi,
I'm constanly now being asked "How Do I Stop Smoking?"
I really emphathise with you, I quit my 10 year, 20 a day habit in a pain-free way!
No stress, no cravings, no weight gain, no pills, patches or gums.
The program I followed was recommended by a friend and now boasts a 90% success rate and is 100% fully guaranteed - can't say fairer than that
All the best..

I feel what you're going through - I am on day 6 now of no cigarettes. I am using the patch and it seems to work for the nicotene - but it is the habit that I find hard to break. After I eat I want to reach for a ciggie, or after a cuo of tea or a wait at the bus stop. I'm determined to quit and I went for a blow test today and have gone from a 10 to 0!! That gives me incentive! All I can suggest to you is really tell yourself WHY you want to quit - what is the alternative (health, money, relationship) and give it another go. It is very hard, probably the hardest addiction I've had to give up. I keep myself busy by either logging on to Q & A or playing spider solitaire or anything to keep my hands busy. You CAN do it - you have to DECIDE!!!

I tried everything too! Hypnosis, acupuncture, tablets, patches etc., etc., etc., over a period of twenty years to stop smoking. Eventually my G.P. prescribed a drug, initially used in the U.S.A as an appetite suppressant but which was found to be very successful in stopping people from smoking. I can't remember the name though but I had smoked 30 cigs a day for over 35yrs and I've now been off them for 5 years. Hendo has named the correct drug it was Zydol. Good Luck!

The best way is to stop suddenly.
And then suffer the abstinence sindrom
As in any other drug.
You need to be strong.
Think that if some people are able to quit from Heroin, YOU CAN DO THE SAME WITH NICOTINE.
Be STRONG my friend, you can do it.
My father did it same as my sister and my uncle ( my uncle started to smoke at the age of 9, now he is 66 and he quit a year ago in that way)
Be the force be with you ( this is not a joke ) ;)

Get yourself a book called The Only Way to Stop Smoking by Allen Carr. You can smoke whilst you read it. There are no scare tactics, he just shows smoking for what it is and tries to get you to reverse the brainwashing surrounding smoking. You will infact by the middle of the book get excited about the prospect of not smoking and furthermore will enjoy the process. You could also attend one of his clinics - Raynes Park in Wimbledon

After 32 years of using and trying to stop using drugs, I found that a 12 step program is the only thing that has helped me to stay clean for 29 months.

Sadly, from the answers I read, no one relates to your plight, but I do. I've quit 6 or 7 times in my life and always have gone back.
I wish there were a magic answer, but my foster mom who smoked for more years than I've been alive went to a hypnosis thing and never smoked again.

When I had my heart attack first time, my doctor advised to stop smoking or risk my life. I had no choice. I did. It is seven years since. I am healthy now. Besides that I take medicines regularly, reduced fat contents, reduced strain, a lot of walking. Smoking is considered as very bad for heart and lungs.

acupuncture, at least 10 treatments gradually extending number of days between them. drink lots and lots of water and green (or any other detox) tea - not less than 2 litres a day, it is very very important.
acupuncture will not make you nonsmoker, nor lots of water will, but they help a lot if you at all have a wish to cut down or quit.
they help in a way that you have much much less body need for nicotine, and then you deal with the mind.
some years ago i tried the gum and other "nicotine" ways, only to end up smoking even more. i thought there is no way for me even to cut down.. but acupuncture was what really really helped me.
wish you all the best !!
