Is it possible to upgrade over unactivated genuine copy of Windows XP Home Edition?

I lost the original key and was wondering if I could purchase and use the key from the Windows XP Home Edition Upgrade software.

You should be able to. I wanted to install XP home on a computer before I purchased it, because I didn't know if it would run on it. I used software registered on another computer. It gave me a limited number of days, then I simply purchased XP and installed it.
