Starting about 1992, Pope John Paul II's health slowly declined. The Vatican confirmed in 2003 that the pontiff suffered from Parkinson's disease.

As a result of influenza, John Paul II was taken to the hospital with an inflammation of the larynx in February 2005. His condition did not improve and he died on April 2, 2005, 6 weeks short of his 85th birthday.

He had a heart attack or a stroke. The pope better protected from the ravages of "war" than even the US President or the Queen of England.

Hmmm, interesting question.

Though we all know that JPII died in his bed in Rome, and he suffered for years of the effects of Parkinsonian disease, he WAS shot in 1981 by a Muslim extremist.

He thereafter suffered greatly from the gunshot wounds. JPII was in his early 80's, so I'd still say it was natural causes though perhaps his death was 'hastened' a tad due to the injuries sustained in '81...

In reality he faked his death because he wanted to fulfill his life long ambition to be a champion poker player and surfer.
