Is it licensed? If so the owner can be found by police dept. If not, run an ad in your local paper's lost and found, usually free - "abandoned bike, describe" - if no one responds, the bike is yours. Better still, you have taught your son and future grandchildern to do the right thing and they will love you all the more for it - even if someone claims the lost property.

I know it sounds stupid but put some signs up around you area without any pictures explaining some features of the bike and if any owners come forward for it then asked them a few details about it including some false questions, which will catch any false statements. If you dont find an owner than keep it as your own- it could of been stolen and thrown in your garden but least you would have given the owners enough time to come forward to collect it.

Sounds like it has been stolen and dumped, phone the police (not 999) and tell them. If it has been reported stolen they will come and collect it, if not they will tell you to bring it in.
If you give it to the Police, no one can accuse you of stealing it.
I would not give it to charity though if you dont know where it come from.

Tell the police about it and let them take the bike. Maybe someone reported it stolen and they would appreciate getting it back.

call the police on their business line and report it. that bike could have been stolen and dumped in your yard afterward. and if that's the case, reporting it will cover your ***. if no one has reported it stolen or missing, etc. the police will probably just let you keep it for your kids.

you only have the police to contact to safeguard yourself and whether they will be interested is a guess but your other option is to type out a message on here in large illuminated figures and put it in the front of your house and i think that's your best option. Somewhere some little lad is upset

ask the neighbours if anyone has lost the bike and then at least if anyone asks what your doing with the bike you have proof that you tried to find the owner, or call police and they would probably pick it up for you
