There are many reason why we are hated by the world, but the most common is because of the way we are portrayed in the media. Americans are constantly shown as greedy, fat, lazy, selfish and power hungry. It is not just the world media. Our own media is guilty of this given the fact that they tend to accentuate the negatives while under reporting the positives. The simple fact is that bad news sells better than good news. However, it should be noted that while there may be widespread hatred of our government the average person in the world does not hate the American people. Here again we are constantly shown the hatred, but rarely are we shown those who indeed do like us. Take Iraq for example. The media constantly reports on polls about how many Iraqis don't like us and want us out of their country, but if you talk to soldiers in the field there are numerous reports of how friendly the people of Iraq are towards our soldiers. In short it is all about perception and perception does not always reflect reality.

I am French and I dont hate the american people. I just really disliked the neo-con (Bush, Cheney, Perle, Rumsfeld, etc.) and their arrogant attitude towards the world "We know what is freedom and democracy, we will bring it to you through war." and their support to the industrial-military lobbies. (Remember of Eisenhower warnings about these lobbies)
But I dont hate people voting Republican. I have some very good friends voting Republican in Berkley, CA. Sometimes, I just dont understand them.
True that there are jalousy from people around the world towards american wealth and spirit, this cant be hidden.
However, what did the CIA in the past did not help some countries to love the United States. CIA has been supportive of autoritarian regimes and dictatorship, specially in South America. I know "CIA is not USA", but well they represented the country and most people in the world (and USA) are not educated enough to see the difference.
I know what I am talking about, because France is doing kind of the same in Africa. (Rwanda for example) Thus some african people hate France.
And there is another point : the fact that american took some time to recognize heating climate. But now, I think that with people like Schwarzenegger and Al Gore, things are changing !

Everyone does not hate us. If they did, we would have been toast a long time ago. Look at a globe and see how small we are compared to every other powerful country on it. If they all hated us so much, they would all join alliance and destroy and take us over. What you are hearing is liberal propaganda from traitors inside this country, as well as the small quantity outside that hate us. But, all countries at all times will hate the other, but will still do business together as long as it is ultimately lucrative for both. (Politicians, that is. ALL FORMS OF POLITICIANS)

The world hates American government for its unwanted dominance over other countries. The ways and means it uses to hold its Super power image leads to millions of unwanted deaths.
And since a country and its people are judged by its government, the innocent Americans are being hated.

Basically, with the political culture and our overall ideology, we get stuck between a rock and a hard place. We're too liberal to be liked by the Muslim world, and we're too conservative to be seen in a good light by a lot of European countries, who tend to be more socialist.
Also, America does tend to stick its nose in other countries' business; basically like we are trying to impose our power upon the rest of the world, and we probably are. And, basically just that we are the most powerful country in the world brings a lot of attention. America has its hands in a lot of different places around the world, plus a very strong military. That alone brings a lot of attention.
It's also the lifestyle - we're pretty much seen as being fat and lazy. Haha.... who knows, it could be accurate.

FarzandA - name the "many" wars we've started.
Stoner -
What "international law" are we breaking? Bush got permission from our government. Iraq wasn't following the UN "enforced" weapons inspectors in.
Why didn't the UN step up and do their job? They all agreed years back that diplomacy had failed and the time had come to take action. But nobody did.

Nobody hates the people, but hates the government. That's because the US government instigates many wars and conflicts around the world and often works with the wrong people. That's what gets the US politicians into trouble.
