The parachute regiment is that is trained to be dropped by parachute into a particular battle zone area. I think. I heard they were trained in a different way because when they land they will not necessarily land on the exact location they are dropped and they might also loose or damage some equipment.I remember about a particular US parachute regiment assault but it was in WW2. They where able to land some on a Japanese Island.Good stuff catch the enemy off guard. Wont see it coming if the attack is made well. They also go any where they are needed and where it is possible to make a parachute landing

Try www.army.mod.com or look up parachute regiment and go to their homepage. Will give you numbers you can call and you can e-mail them too.

The parachute regiment, like all regiments, is very proud of its heritage and achievement and I doubt very much if a polite e-mail asking for more information would be met with anything other than glee at the chance to 'show off a bit' (for want of a better phrase).

If you're in a position to give them some info on the kind of thing you want then you may well get lucky with a few gucci photos etc. Ask for details on things like the traditions that make them different (like when they're allowed to get the wings tattoo for example) and how their role when founded differs from todays modern warfare, plus how they make their selections-these are the kind of specifics that you'll get a good response to I recon.

Good luck.

Parachute Regiments and Divisions were dropped behind enemy lines usually before an assault and would become a vice to trap enemy soldiers. Other regiments did not have the qualifications to be dropped like on D Day! The 101st was dropped behind enemy lines before the assault! Check out "Saving Private Ryan"! Though beware of the 1st 10 or 15 minutes!

Many units now are used for specialized missions and are smaller than Regiments. The US has generally gotten more into Air Mobile and less into Airborne

You also might want to check for Airborne Forces and their histories. Since during WW II there were a number of units that were designated as parachute regiments. The other side of the airborne was the glider forces. I hope this info helps on your search.

para reg. are a purely fighting unit. the idea behind paratroopers is to get your forces behind the enemy lines and then attack them from behind and also cut off their supply lines. this strategy was used effectually by the Allies against the Nazis as the Nazis were well dug in in and it was impossible to fight them head on.most countries now consider their paratroops as special forces. in fact a basic requirement in all special forces is para trooping. some forces like the Brit SAS ,USA DELTA or SEAL etc are all trained paratroops. Israel used its paratroopers ,headed by aerial Sharon, during the 6 day war to capture Jerusalem.paratroopers are the best fighting force a army can offer .
