I'm either awake or asleep, there's no in between. I've just started full time work this year as a nurse, bought a house with my partner and bought a puppy, so i'm a little bit stressed. Any suggestions on how to relax?

Here is an extended exercise designed to relax you from head to toe. Follow these steps:

- Put on quiet relaxing music (optional).

- Lie on the floor (or bed). Make sure you are comfortable.

- Pay attention to your breath for a few minutes. Close your eyes.

- Think of your feet. Scrunch your toes and hold (count to 5). Let go gently and circle your feet to relax your ankles.

- Tighten your calves, push your heels down into the floor and pull your toes up. Hold (count to 5) and then let go gently.

- Tighten your thighs and bottom. Hold counting to 5 and then let go gently.

- Feel your legs getting heavy and let them sink into the floor.

- Tighten your tummy muscles, and squeeze your bottom together. Hold (count to 5) and let go slowly.

- Breathe into your tummy (pretend that you can) Put your hand on your tummy and feel it go up and down with your breath.

- Notice any tension in your back. Breathe into that area until you feel it relax. Let the floor support your back.

- Notice any tension in your chest. Again breathe into your chest until you feel it relax.

- Tighten your hands into fists, hold (count to 5), and then let go slowly.

- Lift your shoulders up to your ears. Hold (count to 5) and then let go slowly letting your shoulders sink into the floor.

- Move your head from side to side to release any tension in your neck. Imagine that your neck is made of rubber. Feel how heavy your head is getting and let it sink into the floor.

- Tighten the muscles in your face by scrunching up your face. Hold counting to 5 and then let go slowly.

- Open your mouth wide (like a yawn) and stick your tongue out. Hold counting to 5 and then let go.

- Check your body starting with your head, moving down through your arms, chest and tummy and bottom, into your legs, and into your feet. Notice any tension left. Breathe into any area that still feels tense until you feel it relax.

- Let your body feel heavy and let it sink into the floor.

- Try to let your mind go blank. Think of yards and yards of flowing black velvet. Allow thoughts to come and go. Breathe slowly and deeply.

- When you feel like it, slowly open your eyes and take a few deep breaths.

- Don't get up until you feel like it. Enjoy!

Millie,
I hear ya! That is a TON of stress! Being a nurse is stress enough for anyone (I can attest to that!), let alone buying a house AND having a puppy! Why don't ya just throw in getting married AND having some kids while you're at it!? heehee.. just kidding!
Seriously, you have enough stress to drive anyone bonkers. What I do to destress is to spend time in prayer, singing, listening to music while I drive, talking about what it is that stresses me with people that are close to me, take nice long relaxing bubble baths with candles and nice music, take time out for myself to get massages, things like that. Sometimes I just go for a drive along the coast with my windows down to take in the ocean breeze and smells of the sea... just to "get away." The most important thing is to remember to take time for YOU! You will be of no help to your partner, your puppy, OR your patients if you don't first take the best care of yourself! Believe me, I've learned it the hard way... be good to yourself so you can be good to others... they'll notice the difference! :-) God bless!!
