The always use the needle instead of the mask. I hate knowing what is going on when they are doing my teeth and the gas mask always put me under or close enough to it that I didn't care what was going on.

I think you are very confussed on dentistry. They use the needle regardless of whether or not they use the "gas mask". The needle, which is anesthetic, is what gets the tooth(teeth) numb, not the gas. The gas has no numbing properties at all. All it does is relax a person, so that they are not as nervous. Some patients do not like the gas. It is purely optional and most dentists do not force it on patients. Some dentists don't regularly offer it in their office. I have worked for a couple of dentists who did not have an office where there were internal lines built into the building, and they had to use a portable unit. These units are cumbersome and these dentists just didn't like offering it to patients simply because it was in the way. We really didn't have a problem with patients refusing to have work done simply because those dentists didn't routinly offer the gas.

The gas does not put you under. It is not made to do that. The mixture of nitrous and oxygen can be changed to increase or decrease the effects, but it is not going to put you under. Now that is not to say that you would not get so relaxed that you wouldn't fall asleep, but there is a difference in puttin someone under and them simply falling asleep.

I really suggest that you ask alot more questions about your dentistry, because I really think that you are not completely understanding the whole process of having dentistry done, because there is no using the needle instead of the gas, you will get the needle regardless. Your dentist should be more than happy to explain this to you.

After reading some other answers I have to say this: People please don't give dental advice if you have no clue what you are talking about!!!!!

Chikbeez: Every dentist uses a needle. How do you think that a tooth gets numb?
Lucianna: Sorry, but the nitrous is not just for kids. I have way more adult patients that use it than kids. It does not require a special license or extra classes, it is part of their dental license. All dentists can provide this. It doesn't make them right under an oral surgeon or a step above a general dentist.
Xani: Gas is perfectly safe as long as it is mixed with oxygen.

Whether you get nitrous oxide (gas mask) or IV/oral sedation...you still get injected with anesthetic (needles). The other methods just make you a bit more "relaxed" A lot of dentists don't use sedation practices because there's reallly no need for routine appointments. Of course you can always ask for sedation methods like nitrous and IV/oral sedation ahead of time/prior to your appointment and the dentist should cater to you.

I almost hate to say this because it gets said so much. But... don't judge Christ by a bad church or denomination! The Christian faith is not sexist- on the contrary, it is open to all and leaves none out. God has promised He will pour out His Spirit on ALL flesh, sons and daughters alike. My church (nondenominational) includes people of every conceivable background. We are also a "come as you are" church; usually the only people you see dressed up are first time guests. Even our pastor wears jeans. It isn't that we don't respect the church as the house of God. It is that we would never want anyone walking in off the street to feel awkward or unwelcome or differentiated from anyone else. Truly the Bible tells us that God is no respecter of persons, meaning He does not value one person over another on the basis of looks, wealth, background, etc. A real Christian is, simply, a person who has given his or her life to Jesus Christ and is trying to become as much like Christ as possible. It is a slow process, and we make a lot of missteps along the way. But He said: "Love one another. By this people will know that you are Mine." We're out here. God bless you sister. Those that throw stumbling blocks in the path of God's children will answer for it.

Some dentists do. I just went to one and she gassed me first. It's supposed to be for kiddies though, so most of the time you have to ask for them to do it.
And not every dentist does it. I think they have to have a special license/extra classes to use it, to do that. It puts them one step below an oral surgeon, but one step above a regular dentist.
Look in your local phone book under dentists and look at the adds, they should mention if they offer nitrous or it'll say something like 'pain free dentistry.'

Be forgiving, wear what you have. Everybody falls short even if they seem to think they dont. I ,along with countless others have been mistreated at church, so dont feel left out. Get even by giving your life to the Lord and going to heaven. The real church can be found inside you by asking Him for His Holy Spirit. Nobody is worth giving your soul away over. YOU ARE LOVED Just like you are.

They still do, my dentist uses the mask or pills. I haven't heard of any dentists using the needle. Good luck!

I was wondering that exact thing.
They kept giving me more and more shots, they didn't work, I could literally feel EVERYTHING for five hours.
I cried and begged for the gas, but they refused.

What the hells up with that?? Sadists.
