I have always heard about this, and now I get to experience it for myself.
It seems to be real. What's going on???

My hubby's parents divorced when he was young and both have remarried so I have 2, a mother-in-law and then a stepmother-in-law. I get along great with the stepmom, it's hubby's real mom that I have problems with!! She has to control or butt into EVERYTHING!! It drives me crazy.
I think it has to do with the fact that they are no longer the major female in their sons' lives, the wife is now in that role. It just drives home the fact that their son has grown up and is doing things without asking mommy first and it upsets them so they try to control what they can by driving us crazy.

In stories told, the majority lean towards the mothers of grooms being more controlling and hazrdous to a marriage than those of a bride.
My brother-in-laws wife is such a hateful and envious person. She is the epitome of what a dreaded mother in law would be. I can only imagine what awaits the future wife of their only son. Another mark on the grooms side.

I thnk it is real. ... I don't really think its all but I do believe most. I think I used to be dreaming when I first met my mother in law hoping one day we would be close and go shopping together and hang out I thought wrong. My mother in law feels like my enemy and i didn't do anything to her. She is so fake at our wedding she should have won an award for the person who shed the most tears. Its all show. She didn't even come up to me and congradulate me. She is causing so many problems lately I feel like she is trying to weeken our relationship but we are a really strong couple and she is not breaking us apart like she would like to. This week we are fighting about the holidays we have been fighting about this issue since the day before thanksgiving I feel like its never gonna end

I don't think all mother in laws are but some are utter b*tches, like my sister's husbands mom she's such a b*tch I hate her....I feel so bad for my sis being technically related to her. She's the perfect example of why you shouldn't have kids when you're 15.

mommy's don't like to "compete" for their baby boy's attention. My mother-in-law was a b*&ch from hell. He was her favorite and he moved out of the house to marry me leaving her to live w/ her husband who she hadn't slept in the same room w/ for 20 yrs. I have heard MIL claim the daughter-in-law is the problem but I'm doubting it and have never seen it but it comes across loud and clear the other way around.

Mine is horrible controlling. She controls her other daughter-in-law, but I am a stubborn b*tch so she doesn't do to good where I am concerned. I am just glad my husband sticks with me, when she starts.
I guess they just don't like the idea of some other woman being more important to their son, then they are.

Not all in laws are bad but the best advice i got during my engagment was beware of meddling mother-in-laws be careful moms can put a wedge in your marriage if you let them

I think mother-in-laws like to hold on to their little boys.
And no girl is ever going to be just perfect for her little boy.

Move as far away from her as possible.

I know there are some wonderful mother-in-laws.
But if you weren't blessed with one.
Move.

For your mar ridge, and for your kids.

It seems like only some are but in the end they show their true colors and turn out like the rest of them so I guess the answers yes.
