I have been tossing this aroud, and cant fint the correct answer.
Reciently after using a discover card fr over 20 years I was asked ro show a licence. I believe this is against the card agreement, as the 'clerk' would now have access to not monly my address, but SS number.
Any ideas??

The clerk was asking for proof of identification. This is perfectly legal. The store is merely protecting itself

Don't some Discovery Cards have your photo on them on the back?

Ok, some states have the SS number on the license. If yours still shows you SS number I recommend getting a new one which will have an alternate number, for Example New Hampshire's is similar to this J11SMI211 (which would be J Smith born on 11/21 and 1st person with that birthday and name)

I recommend getting an alternate form of photo id, I generally show my college ID, which has A) photo, B) name, C) Signature and no other information on it.

If you have a health club membership's or a shoppers club which shows your photo and name, try showing that instead.

But really think about it.. Would you rather show your id to prove it is your credit card or have someone using your stolen credit card? If you ever have someone steal your id, and they are caught because the clerks asks to see a photo id I'm sure your whole opinion on the matter will be reveresed.

Detecting Potentially Fraudulent Transactions

Keep a close eye on the customer who displays the following suspicious behaviors:

* Makes random purchases without paying attention to size, value or price
* Presents you with a credit card taken from a pocket instead of a wallet
* When asked, claims to have left photo identification at home or in the car
* Arrives at or about closing time and tries to hurry you through the sale
* Purchases a large item and refuses delivery
* Displays no interest in the warranty on expensive items
* Is overly slow and deliberate when signing the sales draft, perhaps because the signature is being forged

Look at Number 3, so Discover does say it is ok for them to ask for ID, not a drivers license.

This didn't happen to me very often and I wish it would. I'd feel a little more comfortable knowing that the stores are not only safe guarding my card, but themselves as well. I don't sign my cards any more. Using a sharpie, I write "C Photo ID" where I'm supposed to sign it.
Go to the DMV, or the next time you have your license renewed, and tell them you don't want your SS number on the license. They'll give you a number that isn't the SS. I didn't like my SS on the license either and had them issue different one.

Anytime you use your Credit Card the "clerk" is supposed to ask to see your drivers license. No one ever does. But that is standard practice.
