The previous answer was correct.

Since shortly after the year 2000, any Dimetapp (or other drug store cold remedy or diet aid) you can buy over the counter (without a prescription) will not have the ingredient -phenylpropanolamine - that made it useful as a treatment for dog incontinence. The FDA banned its use in human drugs, so it is much more inconvenient to get.

The drug - phenylpropanolamine - still works for the dog. It's just that you need a prescription from your vet to get it.

If the article was written 15 years ago, Dr Mike may have been looking at Dimetapp for a source of PPA which is commonly used to treat dogs for incontinence- it WAS use as a human decongestant but was removed from the market because of fatal side effects when used in huge doses as a diet aid - it is still used by vets for incontinence. Now the human replacement decongestant PPE was use occasionally for incontinent dogs when PPA first left the human market & was difficult for a vet to obtain- I dont think it quite as effective. and for goodness sakes do NOT use a cold remedy continining tynol or ibprophin both are dog toxic.
However I think your best option is to take the dog to the vet for an exam & the PPA script especally because if she is incontinent due to a urinary tract imfection - well I would feel awfull if I was giving a OTC cold remedy to a dog that needed antibiotics while theinfection was destroying her kidneys.

PS if you dont have to go to the counter at the drugstore to get the dinetapp dont bother with the ingredient lable
