Go and buy "The Complete Joy of Homebrewing Third Edition" , by Charles Papazian - this is a must read before you get started.

That really depends on what you mean by the "best" way. To some people, the best way would be to use an all grain mash, to others a can of extract
( unhopped please ) would suffice. It all depends on how deep you want to get into the hobby. Certainly using a can of malt extract is faster, simpler, and probably cheaper, but the geek-factor joy of brewing ( a nod to Charles Papazian ) is probably achieved when setting up your own mashing system and using an all grain mash.

Get the Papazian book, it will help immensely.
