Can think of only one: Feel awfully inferior after visiting it because one will realise how brilliant people were thousands years ago in building the wall without the use of heavy machinery.

I really liked the Great Wall its amazing how they can build a wall on those very steep hills, but when I visited the Great Wall this summer, the section in Badaling. I really enjoyed it and everything as I said above but it was just too squashed there is absolutely no orderly fashion people just keep pushing. Also the last thing I didn't enjoy was seeing this child just peeing down the wall, by the way his/her parents was with his/her. So I kind of found that disrespectful to others who were walking up the wall and this great historical monument.

THe worst thing about going to the Great Wall is all of the hawkers, the people selling trinkets, t-shirts, cards, etc. They are very rude, pushy, follow you and try to rip you off. Especially at places like Ba Da Ling, these parasites can totally ruin the experience for you. I suggest that China takes care of this problem before 2008 or they are going to have a massive PR disaster on their hands.

Ba Da Ling is the touristy section of the Wall. For others thinking of going to the Wall my friends recommend Mo Tian Yu (sp?). It's farther away from Beijing, but less touristy and quieter. Plus, it has some sort of luge-like ride for coming down from the Wall that sounds like a lot of fun.

Having just visited two weeks ago and not being the fittest, the only negative impact was my sore legs for the next week.
Honestly, there is no negative, even the (not many) vandals.
It's an incredible piece of history and I highly recommend going.
