The proper term is civilian contractors. I was a civilian contractor for 18 months in Iraq.

The vast majority of us made no where near $183,000 or $365,000 per year....the annualize amount of the numbers you mention.

I heard that American fuel truck drivers make up to $200K per year.

The private secuity contractor...Blackwater, Falcon, Canopy, etc make a good amount. In my job part of my duties required that I travel to as many as 20 small forward operation bases (FOB)...over half didn't have a helicopter landing pad so I had to travel convoy. Most of the time I road with the military. But when there wasn't a military convoy going my way I normally caught a with the Blackwater guys. They were mainly fromer Marines; many were force recon.

They were friendly and well trained. My contract stipulated that I was not allowed to carry a weapon. But every time I traveled with Blackwater...once they found out that I had been an active duty Army officer they always made a weapon available to me in the event we were ambushed. I am glad to say I never had to use one of their weapons. As to their pay. On average it ran around $180,000 per 1 year contract.

The average contractor minumum pay for a 1 year contract was about $80,000....with an annual bonus up to 20%.

My company's annual bonus for may position was up to $30,000.

And Bill S is almost correct in his comment that we don't pay taxes. We pay taxes on any amount over $85,000.

I am currently in the process of securing a new contract in Iraq or Aghanistan. If not there then in one of several other countries looking for contractors to work for US companies.

And for those who say contractors are overpaid; maybe. But while I was there during the 50 convoys I took from Kuwait to Baghdad in a regular unarmoured Nissan Pathfinder (before the military forbid travel in"thin skinned" vehicles) we were hit 7 times by IED's (one blast hit the 18 wheeler less than 200 feet behind me) and loss we lost12 people.

And yes...I knew the risks when I took the job.

depends on the position that you would hired. on...check out the personnel contractor in Houston, Texas for security positions....there are truck driving and logistics positions in the war zone that pay up to $200,000/year AND don't pay the taxes
