I know more exercise will help, but if I'm on the bench and huffing and puffing with a painful side, what's the best way to get fresh again and be ready to go back on?

Just put your hands on top of your head and breathe deeply. Cramps come from a lack of oxygen to the muscles. So stretch out the diaphragm and open up the chest, take in more oxygen. The combination of the two will work better than just breathing.

Worked all the time when I used to play rugby. Did it even when I was just winded and had no cramps.
