I always figured that the dearly departed would want you to pass on your caring and love to a new pup in need since Goldie taught you how to be such a good care giver. I think your Goldie would be quite proud of you for continuing to live and love, providing a good, happy life to another dog. I don't think your Goldie would want you to pine away, not sharing all your kindness when there is such a huge need for it these days. And I'm sure you'll find that in time Smokey will become as important to you as Goldie did, never overshadowing what you had with Goldie but different, just as strong and good so you can continue to love Goldie and cherish her memory but also love Smokey and create new memories.

Reading your post it brought tears to my eyes, because I felt the same way as you did and at times I still do, and probably always will, when my Cat of 20 years had to be put down, due to blood infection...The grief we feel is like losing a friend, I felt really quilty 6 months ago when I brought another kitten, it took me ages to feel comfortable, I felt quilt ect.
But I now know that the love I had for Timmy will never go away and the memories will always stay with us....Goldie would be so happy knowing that you now have another friend, that you will take great care of and love it like you did Goldie..
I truly believe it in my heart that she is happy for you and is glad that you have found away to cope with your grief, she would not like you crying over her, so please please don't feel as if you are dishonoring her.
Just by thinking about her and the memories you shared is all that is needed...
It's time for you to now focus on your new little one...
I wish you all the best and have a very merry christmas and give Smokey a big hug from me..

Goldie is happy for you! She only wants you to be happy..It is an honor to her, for you to see a bit of Goldie in your new puppy, as it helps to keep her loving memory alive..and reminds you of the good times..

Do you believe in re-incarnation? maybe you still do have Goldie, only in a 5 mo. lab.... I think Goldie would be happy for you because she knew you needed to fill the void of loosing her.
