The Marine Corps takes a conservative approach to personal appearance. Uniform regulations stress that personal appearance is to be conservative and commensurate with the high standards traditionally associated with the Marine Corps. No eccentricities in dress or appearance are permitted because they detract from uniformity and team identity.
Per MCBUL 1020.34 of 16 may 96, the Marine Corps uniform regulation is changed to prohibit tattoos or brands on the neck and the head. In other areas of the body, tattoos or brands that are prejudicial to good order, discipline and morale or are of a nature to bring discredit upon the Marine Corps are also prohibited. Tattoos, body piercing, and non-dental tooth crowns are identified as body art and commanders are tasked with upholding current regulations regarding eccentric appearance.
Four criteria will be used to evaluate tattoos and brands to see if they comply with Marine Corps standards. These criteria are content, location, size, and effect of associating the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps uniform with the tattoo or brand.
Content. Every tattoo and brand will be viewed to determine if it is representative of gang, racist, sexist, drug, or other prohibited activity. These types of tattoos and brands are prohibited.
Location. Tattoos and brands are prohibited on the head and neck. If they are visible on the arms or legs in the service "C" uniform, they are prohibited.
Size. Tattoos and brands will be evaluated on their size and color. Large and colorful tattoos and brands, especially on the arms and legs will be screened to determine if they are eccentric or project a non-conservative personal appearance. Tattoos and brands that are eccentric or project a non-conservative personal appearance are prohibited.
Association with the Marine Corps and the Marine Corps uniform. All tattoos and brands will be evaluated on the cost that they would have on morale, the maintenance of good order and discipline, leadership potential, and public perception. Marines that possess tattoos and brands that are not in keeping with the standards and traditions of the Marine Corps will be required to have the tattoo(s) removed at their own expense.

Get the tattoo once your in the military. You might get one depending on what you do in the military. You tatto cant be offensive and cant be on arm or head or neck. DO NOT GET A USMC tatto unless your done with basic and job training. You are not a marine till you get through basic. Its like saying your a doctor but you only got accepted to medical school. NOBODY LIKES THAT. Im sure the real marines will be pissed that you are trying to be something they earned and you did not. The military is about honor. Some people dont make it past basic. Special forces most dont make it. Personally i think tattoos are something you not always happy about after a few years. So get something small and make sure it has meaning for you.

LOL...a squirrel. My buddy has one on his thigh reaching for his sack...true story.
Back to the question. I commend and respect you for joining up and serving this great country. I would wait until you get into special forces before that tat. After you graduate boot camp/basic training, I am sure you will want to get a Marine tat. Chances are, your cohorts will as well. Get them all together as a sign of brotherhood. No doubt, there will be a parlor near the base who specializes in them......like a gas station near the freeway.

Better not show up at boot camp with a USMC tat, or, just like the poster above says, they'll make you want to scrape it off with a piece of broken glass. I would definitely wait kiddo. I don't know when you report to MCRD, but you won't want a raw tatto on your skin during boot camp. Anyone who says any differently has not been to MCRD.

I agree with Boredperv.
There are some regulations on tattoos for the Marines. Also, something about having gotten a tattoo. They won't let you give blood even for awhile after you'd gotten a tatto.

I advise that you don't get a tatoo for now. It is often regarded as unclean in many of the world militaries.
I am not sure about the US armed forces, but I am sure they have rules that determine that. You should go to the nearest Marine branch for that kind of information.

My husband is Army, and he had to get a special waiver to join b/c of his tattoos. They will check every one you have to make sure they are not gang-related. They don't like that. I know that the Army does not like them on the hands, that's one of the reasons my husband had to get special permission for his.
Talk to your recruiter about it. If you've already signed up and the paperwork has gone through, then I don't see a problem, b/c my husband got one a couple of weeks before he went to basic.
Like I said, talk to your recruiter. That's what he's there for.

it really is a tremendous decrease sleeve tat and quite thick. A present day recruiter ought to have extra as a lot as this element records if it really is a DQ. i comprehend they have grow to be extra strict suitable to tat regulations of incoming recruits. Your proper wager is to communicate with a recruiter, no longer YA. definite there are countless present day ad service individuals with tats, those are grandfathered. i comprehend the protection stress is presently remodeling their regs on tats with their placement and problem count number being an situation with skills.

don't listen to those clowns. No one cares if you have tattoos as long as they aren't gang tattoos. Get as many as you want. They are always about to change the rule, but they never do. Do whatever you want, but for the love of god don't get a moto tattoo before you go as it will add undue stress to your life for the rest of your existence. None of those other crackers were even in the Marines, so take it me I am.
