im wondering why people do it. i used to actually do it, but i never knew why. i have had a rough past, ill admit that. but it was a year ago and most of the stuff i have gone through is behind me (i still think about it a lot). but i havnt done it for a long long time. i am pretty happy most of the time.
so why do people cut? and could you mabey tell me why i might have done it a while back?
and please dont call anyone or me an "emo" i almost hate that word. such a stereotype!

they may do it to remind themselves not to do things that make them feel that bad again. see how crazy that is? it's pretty counterproductive. but i did it anyway, a loooong time ago, from age 13-19 (like when i hurt someone else's feelings, or if i thought i ate too much that day, etc). no one ever knew, because i did it in places most people can't see. only 2 people in the world ever found out, none of them family.

a lot of people tell you that they do it as a cry for help, and that is true to some extent, until the problem becomes shameful and embarrassing, and you just don't want anyone to know because then they do things like call you emo.

Usually when people turn to self mutilation its because they dont understand the emotions they are going thorough or simply cant feel. When I say that I mean something happens in there life that makes them shut out all emotions and in order to feel anything it has to be physical. Self hate is another reason and that could come from alot of different things, depression being one. I used to cut myself and burn myself with cigarettes and 12 years later I get to look at the scars. That kinda sucks but it also reminds me of just how far Ive gotten in life and that I dont feel the need to do it anymore. When I would cut myself it was some kind of release. I had a hard childhood and for years no matter what happened I couldnt cry which is a normal human emotion and is healing to the body. Just know that you always have the power to change your life and that it will change and you can make things better. I understand that you dont like the "emo" thing. Just understand that emotions are real and its ok to feel! Happy, sad, mad, whatever it my be. Once people learn to come to terms with their emotions and accept them for what they are, their lives become better.

I used to cut a few years ago bc i was going through a really rough time at home. I did it bc when i felt the pain from the cut it took my mind away from everything that was going on around me. After a few months of this one day i just out of the blue said to myself 'Why in the **** am i cutting myself?' And i stopped just like that. I do think about doing it every once and a while but then i remember that God gave us this body as a temple and we shouldn't abuse it. When things get bad now i just remember that somewhere there is someone in this world who has more worst problems than me.

There are many reasons people choose to injure themselves. The most common is that they have problems with self-expression. When someone will not or cannot talk with others about stress, fears, or sadness, they are left with no other way to "release" these bottled up emotions. By cutting or injuring themselves, they are granted a temporary release. The physical pain is easier to cope with than the emotional trauma.

One of the most important things to remember is that cutting is only very rarely associated with suicide unless the depression progresses. I hope this helps.

I can't speak for all cutters, but for me, it was a control issue. I had a lot of extreme emotional pain that I had no control over. What I did have control over, however, was physical pain. In a backwards kind of way, I was releasing some of what I had no control over with something I did have control over. It was as if I could see some of the bad stuff from the inside slide out with the blood that I caused to ooze.
That was many years ago and I have since found healthy ways of dealing with emotional pain.

the meaning of Cutting urself may differ to others. it's the way how people react when they are in an uptight situation. some people did that maybe as a form of punishment. they blame themselves for all the things that went wrong in their life... some ppl thinks that thru cutting themselves it will resolve every problems they had.. free frm all prob. juz end it for once.

actually there's more than one main reason of y ppl did that.. it's a good thing that u have stop doing that. good for ya gal.. wish u best of luck. keep that happiness rolling on.. =D

Only you know why you cut, evey one cuts for their own reasons. You may not want to think about why you did it, but only you know the answer. Cutting is something that might start for one reason but over time the reasons change even though you keep doing the same thing.

I think it has to do with the fact that the physical pain causes you to lose focus of any mental or emotional distress. I've also heard that people do it as a method to release stress. Whether it is effective or not, I can't say.

im 17, and i self harm. i suffer severe depression and i have been locked in a psych ward for an attempted suicide. i am still very suicidal and i cut as a way of easing the pain. i do it as a substitute for suicide, though it really isnt powerful enough, because my cutting is getting worse, and so are my suicidal thoughts.
i guess cutting is a way of releasing your pain, balancing it out and for me, it was also (an ignored) cry for help!

hope this helps

cutter usually do it for the pain release. they cant control the pain in there life, but with cutting they can. it can be a release for all that has built up in them, and that's how to deal with it. and sometimes its a "ill show you" kind of deal and sometimes its asking for help, that you cant deal with things. those who do need to ask themselves why, just before doing it, come up with better solutions, and get help before permanently injuring yourself
