For Viruses, I suggest that you look at Antivir:

AVG:

and avast!:

Each of these are free software solutions for virus protection. I suggest that you try all of them (though not at once!) and see which one you prefer.

You can renew your membership with your current provider, if you have that option. If not I would highly recommend Trend Micro Internet Security. You can get it online or at Best Buy for about $40, and it's really awesome!

I've had Norton before, but it still didn't block certain viruses. Trend Micro has been on our 2 computers for the last year and we haven't had one virus. When I had Norton, I had 3. Plus, now that I've had Trend Micro, I just renewed my subscription for free! They sent me and email and I am now protected for another year for up to 3 computers!

I've downloaded the free software from websites too, but a lot of it is really complicated and you really have to know a lot to use it. Buying Trend Micro was easy, and the installation was very simple.

You definitely need to get an anti virus program. There are too many things out there that can seriously damage your computer, so which ever one you decide to buy, it will save you a ton of money in the future.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.
