I think the oldest recorded number of the beast was 616, in a Babylonian papyrus. They got it wrong in the translations of revelations according to some scholars. So 666 is just a number, and doesn't bother me.

You've already got a Social Security Number. Eventually you will be required to have a chip implanted in your body which will contain a number used to identify you. Of course it won't actually be legally required (at least not right away), it's just that you won't be able to get anything without it. Like if you don't have a SSN now - they aren't required, but not having one generally means you're an illegal immigrant, so everyone who can get one does.
When the chips come, it will be the symbolic equivalent of the Mark of the Beast from Revelations. And you'll get one, because you don't really want to watch your family starve, or even go without the frivilous niceties we've come to accept as our birthright.

The mark 666 is mentioned in the book of Revelation, chapter 13:15-18.
He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, 17 and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or[f] the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
18 Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.

According to this text there is a power or a ruler at the end of time who will force all the people on earth to receive a mark of authority from that government, on their forehead or hand, otherwise they will not be allowed to buy or sell.

Many people has suggested different names of individuals, countries, trade marks, or even bar codes on commercial goods. Some of the individual names are, Adolf Hitler, Ellen Gould White, Ronald Reagan, Bank Card etc. The most interesting is the names referring to the Roman Catholic Church or its leader, the Pope. One of the titles carried by the Pope is Vicarious Filii Dei, which some people calculated and the letters is Roman letters has the numerical value of 666 if totalled.
So is the title : Dux Cleri, also in Latin, meaning The Head of the Clergy, or the Head Priest. In Greeks, the words HE LATINE BASILEIA (the Latin Kingdom) and ITALIKA EKKLESIA (The Italian Church), In Hebrews the word ROMIITH, meaning "the Roman Church" and "ROMITI" menaing "The Roman person", each of those two words has the equivalent of 666 as the total of its letters. Since ancient time to the number 666 has been given significance. During the Babylonian period, the Babylonian Priests who worshipped the Sun God, used to wear gold medallion carrying inscriptions of the picture of the Sun God on one side and a 36 grid or columns, 6 rows each both vertical and horizontal, making it 36 altogether, with all the numbers from 1 to 36. Every column has a total number of 111, so horizontally and vertically, they all come to the total of 666.
The Babylonian priests claimed that they received the wisdom to come up with such an amazing callculation before the invention of calculators or computer, from the Sun God. And the amulets or medallions were used in connectioin with Sun worship.

So we just have to wait, who or which organization or country will come out with the predicted decree in connection with prohibition in buying or selling in relation to religious worship.

Back to the question: If you have to take the mark 666 on you to buy food for your family or yourself, will you do it? Due to the consequence that will come through doing that as mentioned in the text found in the next chapter, Revelation 14: 9-11

" Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”

As for me and my family we have taken a decision. So let us just wait and see, and hope we take the right decision.

Well god forbid anyone be in that type of situation HOWEVER it is only a number and it also depends on what religion you are, I suppose if your a Christian or Catholic thats a big NO NO. The only way a number like 666 would take a big toll on you is if you actually belived in the number then you would be ******* psychologically.

It would be somewhat counterproductive to take the mark of the beast in order to feed yourself or your family. The whole point of the mark is to point out that there are only between 3.5 and 7 years left before God returns at which time all those who took the mark will be killed anyway.
Those who refused it will live forever with God so what's the advantage of taking it and living a few years when, if you don't take it, you can live forever.

I take it you have never read the "Left Behind" book series by Timothy LaHaye.

If you had, you would understand that God has ways of providing for those who remain behind after the rapture. Most Christians do not believe we will be here. The most prevalent belief is in a pre-tribulation rapture. This would mean that only people who had not accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior would be around, and God has made certain provisions for the people who come to His Son AFTER the rapture.

What this means to you, is that most Christians are laughing at your question right now, while those who believe in a post-tribulation rapture are still secure in their knowledge that God promises never to ask more of us than what we can bear.

Does that answer your question?

I am an atheist. I do not believe in the prophecies of the bible. I don't even accept the possibility they are correct.

That being said, I would not. Not because the number 666 has any meaning to me; rather it's due to the strong libertarian streak in my political beliefs. That is an absolute breach of human rights.

If you have to ask a stupid question or think, what you do.

This is a pink elephant question. If you had to be a pink elephant to buy food, would you do it? Try being a pink elephant.

666 is not a mantel that we wear, it is an identification.

You may not like my answer, but it would helpful if you did not confuse biblical verses with social issues. Crime for food is a common theme.

I'm going to have to say 'no' right now because I still believe enough people will refuse and we'll be able to find another way to survive. Even if they physically forced us to have an implant, what are they going to do when people decide to cut the chip out of their body? I'll have a big garden in my backyard or I'll shoplift if I have to.
