Pick something you have a real interest in. Then you can have fun while researching your project.

Music, excercise, social interaction...

If it is a small project, then I suggest not to go for any difficult thing.
It would have been helpful if you had mentioned in which field are you studying.
If you are an engineer i would suggest you make a simple transmitter and receiver pair.
Intrestin and simple.
