why is it hard to say 'No" without feeling guilty?

Because you have a conscience, and don't like to hurt others. That's a good thing to have.

When it comes to men I have no issues saying no and I don't feel guilty. I feel good about myself because I don't get taken for a ride. There are other relationships where I would and that's only because when you care about someone - there's always the thought in my mind - what if what they are asking is reasonable and what if I'm denying them something that means alot to them and so forth. But, that's false guilt because if you say yes to everyone all the time - you're just a doormat and you belong to others only to be told what to do all the time. I need to be me not what others want me to be. So, there is a balance - I mean everytime you have to say yes or no - there are things you're sacrificing - others you stand to hurt or damage by your choice - so many factors to consider other than that one person's request - at least that's how I find it is with me. So, I have priorities - God - then hubby - then kids - then church, then work then community. Everyone will have different priorities, but when you put them in order like this - it helps you see clearly so that when you do say yes or no - to anyone - you don't have to be guilty based on what you value and prioritize as most important in your life.

There is a book titled "How to Say No Without Feeling Guilty." I don't know the author as I loaned mine out and never got it back. But, it is well written and helps in all sorts of ways in your life. It is an easy read. You may find it at the library

because it hurts us to hurt others. when you watch a movie, you feel pain when the characters do. you feel the same thing when you say no to others, and see their pain.
