.

Files with extension .dat are video files, which could be opened using Windows media player.

If you could not open the file, then go to command prompt, change the extension of that file from .dat to .mpeg and then open it with winamp or media player2 or some other players supporting that type.

It could be anything.

The .DAT extension is used in many programs. If you have an idea of what the file should contain, take a look here:

http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=.DAT

Based on the description of the program, you might be able to narrow your choices, and find out which program you need.

On a side note, most programs that use a .DAT file don't need the .DAT files to be accessed by anything other than the program.

The most common types of dat files are DATA and VIDEO-CD data.

While the data DAT file are of no use to be opened up, but the video DAT files can be opened up in any media player like Windows Media Player etc.

.dat is one of the least helpful file extensions out there. Many, many programs use this extension for many different kinds of data files. If you can provide any more info about the origin or presumed content of the file, it may help us figure out what's in the file and how to open it.

Can be just about anything: text, graphic, or general binary data. There is no specific structure for a .DAT file. You can use an editor like EditPad Pro to look inside a .DAT file and possible determine its contents and relationship with a program.

If you are working under the Windows platform, there are several options:
1) use notepad to open it , open-> select file
If there is only text information in you .dat file, you will see
it correctly. otherwise, as the .dat file might be a binary file, you
will not undertstand the content.

2) use UltraEdit to open it (http://www.ultraedit.com/).
It is a powerful editor and is able to recognize the file format
correctly. Howerver, ultraedit is not free.
