I believe it is because of our enourmous love of foods containing high sugars and carbs. If we cut things like soda, candy, pasta, and bread from our diets, (kind of like atkins) we will see the pounds drop to the floor. people like to binge and eat frequently, but if they cut the sugar and carbs... they could eat as much as they wanted and not gain any weight.

You're exactly right. It's really just arithmetic: too much food in; too little exercise output. And food has become recreational in much of the industrialized world. "Snack food:" look at how much of it exists in an average supermarket, and none of it is essential to maintaining life. Imagine if we all took up knitting or something, instead of snacking: the world would be knee-deep in sweaters!

Fast food is a major part of why we Americans are fat. Also portion size has alot to do with it. Usually when you order a plate of food in a restaurant it should feed 2-3 people. We are also stressed out emotional eaters. People need exercise in their lives everyday and alot of us dont get that. If you have a job sitting in front of a computer all day its not good for you! Another thing is tv becomes a babysitter to alot of kids nowadays. What ever happened to the days where kids had to go outside and play and use their imaginations? I disagree with what you said about cutting carbs. Our bodys need carbs, thats how we get energy. We just need to watch the amount we eat. Natural sugars that are found in fruits and even some veggies, like corn, are good for us but we shouldnt add sugar. So I do agree that sodas and candy could be eliminated and we could find a better alternative. Good fats that come from avocados, fish and nuts are good for our bodies and brain development. So pretty much we as a whole need to be better educated, watch portion size and exercise daily.

@ Ross G - Uh hello, try to be a little more mature. And if you're going to be immature, at least make your comment funny. Or maybe even original?

There's a lot of reasons why America seems to be an overweight country. One could be people can't afford to buy the right types of food/ingredients to make foods healthy. Another is lifestyle, everyone seems to be on the move and the best choice for food, is fast food. It could also because we relie on technology too much. I mean we don't really do anything on our own anymore. Cars = downfall of the United States. :P

Our lifestyle for one, we tend to be eat on the run creatures, and tv watching people. As well, fast food, fat food, is too easily available. I agree there are too many simple sugars, high sugar concentrated foods, and dropping those do help. But exercise is also key.

There is a restaurant or more on literally every block of a city now a days. There is not the need of exercise to get the food we need to survive. A lot of people's jobs do not allow for eating when they are naturally hungry. Their jobs can cause stress which in turn robs them of their natural need for rest, which can also lead to the unatural cravings for bad food. Americans tend to be more prosperous and can afford to buy many more choices of food. They are past the days of "...be thankful for what you have on your plate..."

This is true. If people only cared about themselves then they could stay in shape. However apparently many people don't. Either that or they love those fattening foods to imagine giving them up. Everyone has something that makes them happy for some I guess it just happens to be food.

If you had to feed a family of four on the lowest budget possible I guarantee you couldn't get the most mileage out of low fat low carb foods.

I would agree with you, but a big part of the issue is stress and busy schedules. When we spend so much time working and going and going and going, we tend to eat very quickly (not good for digestion) and we tend to eat on the go (inculding unhealthy fast food).
