On my ring finger of my right hand, I have this corn-like bump right near the upper knuckle on my finger. It's from writing since that's where the pen is pressed up against as I write (I write differently than is usual).

Anyways, it's been there for a few years and I have absolutely no idea how to get rid of it. Even over long periods of time where I do minimal amounts of writing instead of the usual amount, it doesn't get any better.

It's a noticeable bump, it's mostly dry skin it seems (like the calluses that you get on the heels of your feet). It's painful after writing for long periods of time and it also makes me incredibly self-conscious when it comes to my hands.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to make it better or get rid of it, that would be great.

Thanks in advance.

I actually have a couple of suggestions for you. First, get a rubberized finger grip to slip on your writing instruments. They sell them where the pencils and pens are sold, and are just simply pencil grips. That will put some padding between your finger and the pen/pencil. You're gripping both much too tightly, so you might want to be a bit choosier about your writing instrument. A mechanical pencil and a rollerball or gel ink go much smoother and require less pressure to write with. Also consider changing your writing style to use the more conventional grip, at least for a while to give the spot a break. In the meantime, use a combination of things to attack the callous. You can use a pumice stone to rub it just like you use on your feet. Afterwards, apply some vitamin e from a gelcap, poke a hole in one of the generic gelcaps and squeeze it on the spot. After you rub it in, apply a good creamy lotion designed to help extremely dry cracked skin. Nivea makes some in a tin that works great, but there are plenty of options out there. A thick cream works better in this case than the lotions in a pump bottle. If you do this at night and can stand it, wear a glove on that hand to really concentrate the cream on the finger. If not, try a bandaid over it, just to keep the emolients on the skin. It will take a while to actually get it all smoothed down, and may always remain somewhat thicker there than other spots. But betweent the pencil grip and a smoother pen/pencil, and this, you should get some improvement.

Ive had the same problem as well, but i have it around near my thumb. One thing I do is that I soak it in a very diluted chamomile tea. The tea will both soothe and soften hard skin. Although the brew will stain your hand, it comes off easily with soap and water. Another way to soften tough calluses, involves crushin five or six aspirin tablets into a powder. Mix into a paste with a tablespoon each of water and lemon juice. Apply this to all hard-skin spots on your hand, then put your entire hand into a plastic bag and wrap a warm towel around everything. The combination of the plastic and the warm towel will make paste penetrate the hard skin. Sit still for at least 10 minutes. Then unwrap your hand and scrub gently the area with a pumice stone. All that dead, hard, callused skin should come loose and flake away easily. Hope I helped

I'd rub a pumice stone on my hands once a day and keep them well moisturized with something like Neutrogena dry skin cream.

Also, get a cushion for your writing utencils.

There are ointments for calluses. The brand Dr. Scholl has ointments for calluses. I'm just not sure if the ointment is still available in the market. :-)
