I give her plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and skimmed milk. Fat and sugar are kept to a minimum and junk food and sweets are not allowed. She has a gymnastics class twice a week. I've been told by some that she'll grow out of it in time, and others say its probably her genes. Her doctor doesn't seem concerned and just told me to make her portions a bit smaller which I already did. I'm really concerned about her health and don't know what else to do, especially when she says she's hungry when it's been only a little while since her last meal. I'm sure she's not eating out of psychological reasons because she's an only child and very much loved; in fact her father spoils her too much. She was born weighing 3.75 kilos and was a chubby baby from the start. Now that she's older and the "baby fat" seems intent on staying I'm at my wits end. Any suggestions? HELP!

"baby fat" usually lasts til adolescence. Around 11 to 14.
If she is getting exercise and eating healthy and not over indulging due to boredom. Then I really don't see any problem. I think portion control and counting calories at such a young age is unnecessary and may become a serious problem or eating disorder in the future. Don't focus so much on her weight and start becoming more active with her. It will be a nice bonding experience for the family and a healthy lifestyle for her to keep for the rest of her life. Also, if her Doctor isn't concerned...then that's an even better reason to lighten up.

Its OK. Most likely she will retain her baby fat until the onset of puberty.

Instead of worrying about what her looks focus on developing healthy eating and exercise habits. Get her hooked on reading and learning so in the future she will develop a strong mind to match her strong body. Introduce her to as many sports and Outdoor events as you can to help her develop a healthy passion for exercise and physical exertion.

Another point to mention Fat isn't her enemy. Fat intake should be balanced 1/3 saturated fats (meat, dairy), Monounsaturated Fats (Nuts, Avocadoes, Olive Oil), and 1/3 Polyunsaturated Fat (Fish Oil, Flaxseed).

Her being hungry is a good sign. By eating every 2-3 hours her metabolism stays elevated and protects her by keeping insulin and blood sugar levels low.

If her doctor is not too concerned about it, i wouldn't be either. She will hit a spell while growing up and will even out. Just dont over kill, so to speak, and make her too concerned about her weight, there are enough girls in this world with eating disorders.
