i go to coffee shops first for the coffee. if there's good coffee, i'm there, even if it's just a shop that serves standards (there are a lot, you only have to be patient and unqueasy). i'm okay, too, with the more popular specialty coffee shops (starbucks, seattle's best, etc.), but i usually go there to meet up with friends, where in an hour or so, we get up and leave to go to a more uncommercial type of joint, to avoid the crowds and a lot of pretentious "coffee" drinkers. sometimes, some shops play too loud music and even "muzak" (the horror). not too appealing for me!

service is also key to the attraction. a coffee shop barista or crew member who smiles and makes you feel welcome will always make me feel confident to go back to the shop. absolutely hate those who don't seem to know or care that you're there, with your money, ready to buy the product they're selling.

since i'm part of the demographic that has income for extras like books and cups of coffee (outside home and office), i'm not too conscious about the prices of coffee drinks. although i do find those fancy cups exorbitant! sometimes you can't even recognize the coffee in your cup because of all the goo, cream, and whatnot in it.

the best coffee shop for me, at the end of the day, is one that's located somewhere quiet and unassuming, where they serve the blackest and freshest coffee, and that relaxed conversation with friends is as much as accompaniment as the refreshment that hot cup gives me.

I go to Starbucks because there is great service, it's clean and "shiny"(they always look new". I don't really like their coffee though however their mixed drinks are quite good. The also have promos which are nice for me due to the whole free stuff randomly thing to show appreciation for the customer, and it helps push products for the buisness as well though. At Starbucks you have to pay for access to the net and as a person with a laptop I'd rather go somewhere that treated me equally as good and yet had free internet. But the second I was treated with attitude by someone who is making my coffee I'd be back to Starbucks in a flash. Hope this helps

I judge by atmosphere! Before the Starbucks craze, I went to a College coffee shop that had a fireplace all the time for a friendly outgoing atmosphere where I felt cozy and at home.

Here in Denver they all are about the same. The one I go to is fairly priced, friendly owner small shop. I also like their quiche. and most of all it's close, less than a block away.
In Seattle, where I use to live, there were many, many, different coffee shops. I choose the ones with the most atmosphere, like the fire place, brick wall and so on.
I just never liked Star Buck's, there's allot of better places to go, with better tasting coffee.

In Canada we have a national coffee franchise named Tim Horton's (after the hockey player who founded it). It is like coffee is the national drink. They are prolific and you find them all across Canada I believe. There are supposed to be all kinds of them (and Canada is an enormous land). They are enjoyable since everybody is going to them. They have moments of being packed by corporate types on their coffee breaks and blue collar folk lined up in the morning. If you are crafty, you can slip in during empty stretches when you can slip in and get a fast cup of coffee. Teenagers frequent them too. I doubt anything could draw me away since I find Tim Horton's totally absorbing. I think a less mainstream establishment might do the trick where I could sit at a table with a checkered cloth and peel open my own creamers.

Clean, friendly service, comfortable and good variety of foodstuff. I go to Starbucks in Paris because that's the only coffee shop we have. Good thing they fulfill all of the above.

I judge them if they have a place to plug in my laptop. I would go to a different one if they had a power outage.
