We just formed a new youth group for our kids in the neighborhood. The area is a bit tough, Native American, low income. The name of our church is St. Michael the Archangel. Does anyone have any ideas what to call the group? It will be for kids 12 and up. Any advise is very welcomed, like what to watch out for, should our group get some sort of ID badge etc. this way we can keep track of whose there and who shouldn't be there etc.

Don't be exclusionary-welcome all comers. Jesus did.

Let the kids decide what to call their group. Remember that your role is basically to facilitate and encourage them to grow in leadership skills. Naming their own group will encourage them to take ownership of it.

Keep the group times very, very, structured and well supervised. Have at least one adult to every three or four kids if at all possible, at least to start with, so the kids feel safe. Keep the meetings to a structured pattern and maybe always end with snack/fellowship/music. Don't expect too much in the way of religious conversions, you must first gain trust and build relationships.

Blessings,
cryllie

In the native history they talk about a white man or a god son that walked with their People. Find that name in their language. Name the group as .......s children. With the slogan Buy All Means. Talk to a Wise Elder they will Know. P.S don't call them kids ,I have children God gave me children. Find the word kids in the bible. In the native history Jesus walked with them. An elder can tell you that. Be vary respectful they know more than you think. Respect is the answer. How many names does God have anyway, many.

I've always thought "The Galilee Gang" might be a fun name for a church youth group.
The group might feature activities balanced between standard fun kid activities with some easy outreach or helping projects.
For ID purposes, perhaps a badge with the group name and a picture thought up and created by the members of the group.
Encourage questions and discussion of current/topical issues, guiding (not pushing) toward Christian viewpoints; encourage sharing stories and experiences--
Watch for gang/group mentality problems within and outside the group.
Help them become good disciples, good examples for themselves and for the community.
