Pick "No Best Answer," add the question to your watch list, and when it is resolved you can add a comment.

I'm new to all of this and messed up on the "choose the best answer", thought it was giving others a chance to put it to the vote, but once I clicked on it came up unresolved Question....eeek!! Couldn't get it back to status quo, so have just left it and hoped for the best....sorry to all those who answered my dilemma though.

Have not yet reached level 2 in order to rate answers, and not too sure how the entire choosing/scoring etc is done anyhow!

When you are able to vote on an unresolved question it means that the asker has closed it to questions or the time for answering had run out. Then you are left with picking what you believe to be the best of the answers that are left or pick "no best answer" if you don't think any of them are very good answers.
What you can do if you want to give an answer to a question that has been resolved or is closed to answering, is put the question forth in a general way with your answer and ask what people think of your answer.

Wait till that kind of question comes up again and be ready with your answer.
