Methadone is the strongest and long lasting oral narcotic. It takes at least 3 days of regular dosing before peak blood levels are reached so you have to be very careful when first taking it unless you are already very tolerant to narcotics. You shouldn't drink any alcohol or take tranquilizers while taking methadone. If you have severe chronic pain then methadone can be a god send, assuming you never abuse it and only take it exactly as directed. If you don't take it as directed you are asking for big trouble as methadone is easy to overdose on if you don't follow the Dr's directions carefully.

Methadone is usually used to treat withdrawal from other drugs (opiates) As far as for pain management it seems to be used more often in people with chronic pain. Here is a link for more information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methadone
Methadone is being used by more doctors as a alternative to opiate based drugs. As well as Morphine, codeine, hydrocodone etc.
Your Doctor will be more likely to prescribe methadone as treatment for pain if you have a propensity to addiction. But that wouldn't be the only reason he might prescribe it.
If you have worries or concerns, speak to your doctor. Make a list of things you want to know before going in so you don't forget.
Take the time to research before you make a decision and what you think is best for you.

Go in your neighborhood pharmacy and ask for a e-book referred to as The Merk Manual. This is a e-book that's utilized by the complete clinical subject in relation to studying medicinal drugs. You might additionally assess your neighborhood library however I do not know the way up-to-date it might be. These books are issued each and every yr. With new meds. Good Luck
