I am bringing my cat back from Canada into the US. I checked all airline and national regulations weeks ago to ensure there wouldn't be a problem. I have a rabies certificate and a list of shots and vaccinations she has previously received. However, I was just informed that Massachusetts, where I will be arriving, requires a Health Certificate. I leave in 2 hours, so there's no time to obtain one. Will this actually pose a problem?

Yes, you wont be allowed to bring the cat in without the required documentation.

I would strongly recommend that you leave the cat at home or arrange to have it flown in later because of this:

Sadly, pets excluded from entry into the United States must either be exported or destroyed. While awaiting disposition, pets will be detained at the owner's expense at the port of arrival.

We had my sisters cat flown from California to Ohio where they moved, and the cat was not allowed on the plane without the current health certificate. You dont want to have to leave your pet at the airport. I would call the airlines ASAP and make sure you get all the relevant information before brining the cat with you

Yeah, it will.

When you arrive at the airport in Massachusetts they will want to see it. If you don't have it there will be some trouble. At the least they will have you call your vet and have him/her fax an affidavit saying they examined the cat and it is healthy. At the most they will hold the cat until a vet can examine it there and provide them with their certificate.

Best-case scenario is, whoever is supposed to ask for it forgets to and you slide through. Absolute worst-case scenario is they ship your cat back to Canada and bill you for it.

They are serious about that type of thing. They wouldn't require it if they weren't. When they ask, though, call the local SPCA or HS and they might be able to help.

Yes it can. Depending on how you are crossing the border, the guards could give you a hard time about not having proper paperwork for travel into the US. If they do give you a problem, you could be forced to find a vet to do a Health Certificate for travel in.

we took our dog into Canada and were told we needed a health certificate. We obtained this from our vet. I'm not sure what would be done if you don't have it. Did you ask if they would accept what you have?
