It is not in the Bible, except in the hygiene laws like Leviticus 15:16. Scripture passages like that require "unclean" status for the rest of the day until sundown. I believe that would require other family members and friends knowing that you had experienced an emission (nocturnal or otherwise) and thereby might have reduced the occurence of masturbation in the general population. But neither Old nor New Testament scriptures forbid it altogether. It seems to me that there are enough grave sins, that do affect other human beings negatively, and which are expressly forbidden in the Bible, to worry about, so we shouldn't concern ourselves with things not forbidden. If they were that bad, they would have been forbidden.
On the other hand, the words of Jesus, regarding lust in the heart and it's consequences being on a par with the actual acts of adultery and fornication, would definitely forbid modern photographic pornography as an aid to masturbation. The addictive and controlling effects of such porno seem to bear His prohibition out in practice. God does not want you ruining your real sex life by becoming addicted to porn. If you do masturbate with the aid of pornography, repent and seek professional help before it ruins your life.

For once, most of the serious answers are good. I think it's a sin mainly because of the images that run through the mind.
I have been celibate for over 20 years since becoming a Christian, but sometimes the temptation to masturbate is very strong. I have found success only in giving the whole thing, the desire, over to God when the desire is strongest and almost compulsive. The sexual desire itself is not a sin; it's a natural human condition without which we would not marry and have children. I have asked God to take away all that is evil in my sexual desires and replace it with His kind of sexual desire. This way I am learning to love and appreciate women more as people and the sordidness of my fantasies is gradually diminishing and changing into something more maneagable.
Because I'm 56, the intensity of desire is nothing like it used to be. This makes it easier, but also makes me aware that the intense desire that I'm losing was a good thing if I could have directed it properly.

There is nowhere in the Bible that says masturbation is a sin. However, the Bible says if you think it in your heart, then it is the same as you committed the sin. Soooooo, what are you thinking about when you commit the act? It may not necessarily be a black and white issue, but I don't think it's a good practice. You can say you're sorry after you do it. But repentence means a change in behavior, not just saying you're sorry. Know this -- God's love does not stop because you sin. I just don't buy into the theory of, "Well, God is gonna forgive me, so I'll just do it and say sorry later". But, no matter what, God loves you! I wish you well.

My mother thought it was a sin. It was very embarrassing when my mom caught me experimenting with masturbating when I was 12 years old. She made me leave the door open when I was in a room alone even the bathroom. She kept it up a full year until finally I grew tired of it and masturbated in front of her at the dinner table. Afterwords I got up went to my room, closed and locked the door and she never bothered me about it again. I never asked for forgiveness. I'm an Atheist 18 now and I still enjoy it. xx

The action you do while masterbating is not a sin, its what goes through your mind is the sin. To ask for forgiveness? Just say in your heart "God, what I have done was wrong, so I am sorry for my sin and I thank you that your Son Jesus has died and rose again so I may be forgiven."
God bless.

The word is not in the Bible. But we are to keep ourselves pure. It is something that should not be done. God sees everything we do, and knows everything we say. He will forgive a person of their sins, but if you keep doing the same sin over and over, and ask forgiveness, and never turn from that sin. Then you were never really sorry for that sin.

It seems that God regards masterbation as unclean in much the same way as he regards a woman's period. It is here referred to as "nocturnal emission." I know of no other scripture that deals with the topic specifically, but here, He makes provision for it for those serving in military service in this passage:
Deut 23:9-14
9 When you are encamped against your enemies, keep away from everything impure. 10 If one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside the camp and stay there. 11 But as evening approaches he is to wash himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp.
12 Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. 13 As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement. 14 For the LORD your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.
NIV
So, it simply seems to be a bodily function that the Lord views as unclean. I hope this helps.

Where's that in the bible? Of course, no single one found in the bible. Can you find the word "bible study or abortion in the bible? Of course not. The bible does mention things about lust as evil. When you're masturbating, you're trying to satisfy your lust and thus it is a grave sin. Use the virtue of morality to also understand the bible.

A youth asked: “Is masturbation an unforgivable sin?” Masturbation is not mentioned at all in the Bible. The practice was common in the Greek-speaking world during Bible times, and several Greek words were used to describe the practice. But not one of these words is used in the Bible.
Since masturbation is not directly condemned in the Bible, does this mean it is harmless? Absolutely not! Though it is not classed with such gross sins as fornication, masturbation is surely an unclean habit. (Ephesians 4:19) The principles of God’s Word thus indicate that you “benefit yourself” by strongly resisting this unclean habit.—Isaiah 48:17.
Arousing “Sexual Appetite”
“Deaden, therefore, your body members,” urges the Bible, “as respects . . . sexual appetite.” (Colossians 3:5) “Sexual appetite” refers not to normal sexual feelings but to passion that is out of control. Such “sexual appetite” can thus lead to one’s indulging in gross acts, as described by Paul at Romans 1:26, 27.
But does not masturbation “deaden” these desires? No, on the contrary, as one youth confessed: “When you masturbate, you dwell mentally on wrong desires, and all that does is increase your appetite for them.” Often an immoral fantasy is used to increase the sexual pleasure. (Matthew 5:27, 28) Therefore, given the right circumstances, one could easily fall into immorality. This happened to one youth, who admits: “At one time, I felt that masturbation could relieve frustration without my getting involved with a female. Yet I developed an overpowering desire to do so.” He committed fornication. Not surprisingly, a nationwide study revealed that the majority of adolescents who masturbated were also committing fornication. They outnumbered those who were virgins by 50 percent!

Matthew 5:27-29 27"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.'28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.--That being said-when you masturbate you are thinking of a woman lustfully...so it's like adultery which we know is a sin.
